Kissing Booth Goes to the Dogs

Who can resist a smooch from a pooch? Turns out, not many. In fact, dusting off the kissing booth tradition and turning it over to the dogs might be just the thing to revive struggling pet adoption programs.

Julie Uthoff and her husband Jim recently got to work designing a beautiful kissing booth for some very special dogs as part of a rescue mission led by Sweet Paws Rescue of Massachusetts. Most of the dogs who come to Sweet Paws are rounded up in the Birmingham, Alabama area where there is a run away crisis for dogs who are not spayed/neutered, many of whom live outdoors in neglectful conditions or outright homelessness.

The dogs are provided complete veterinary care and mothers are given a safe place to nurse their puppies before making the long journey northbound to find forever homes. And what better way for the dogs to put their best paw forward than with the simple act of a kiss?

A Great Adoption Tool

“Children were naturally drawn to the booth,” Julie said of their recent kissing booth event at an area Petco. “They loved to high-five and shake hands. This was a huge draw for families. I’d hold Harley’s paw up and say ‘Helloooo There’ to the ladies walking by and they’d be all over him. Then I’d tell their boyfriends or spouses that they could go about their business.  There was a lot of joking going on and all the fun lead to adoption inquiries.”

While Sweet Paws engineers the kissing booth road show in the Northeast, they are also working with partners in the South to create reform.

“We’re working with Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation to fix the underlying problems,’ Julie said. “While we can put a bandaid on the situation, they are working to change their legislation when it comes to spay/neuter laws, leash laws, dog fighting, puppy mills and more.”

Julie’s greatest wish for the program is to see it blossom.

“I want our rescue dogs to live the dream,’ Julie said, “to have a loving family that will care for them and enjoy all the wonders of life with them as they would any other family member. And, in return, that these wonderful pups will leave a huge pawprint in the lives of their adoptive families.”
