Mark and David’s Family is About Love

In an effort to reach out to voters in Minnesota ahead of a 2012 ballot on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, the Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) recently launched a video campaign called “A Family is About Love” urging viewers to see that no matter the make-up of the family love is a common bond.

One video for the campaign features Mark and David, a same-sex couple who have enjoyed a 28-year relationship together. Mark and David cannot marry due to Minnesota’s existing statutory ban on same-sex marriage. Codifying this discrimination would greatly narrow the chances of them being able to marry in the foreseeable future. The campaign successfully puts a face to those people who will be affected by the constitutional amendment.

A recent poll by Public Policy Polling found Minnesotans are nearly evenly divided on the amendment with 46% of people favoring the amendment while 47% opposed with 7% remain undecided. Similarly, 45% of people said that gay marriage should be illegal while 46% said it should be legal, 9% remain undecided. Read more on that here.

An important part of marriage is ensuring a stable start for the next generation. These two won't be contributing. The idea that their attachment requires formal solemnizing is unrealistic and shouldn't be imposed on society's process for renewal and posterity. Marriage has far more to contribute than just a strong attachment between husband and wife; that's only where a marriage starts.

What a wonderful video! I've known two people like them who were together for about the same time. Their time ran out when one of them died from a heart attack. I both of them still.

Hopefully, amending their constitution takes something more than a simple majority popular vote. Best wishes Mark and David

No matter the proclivities everyone deserves to be loved, I have no interest in telling someone else that they are not allowed to love and be loved by another being.
If you want to commit and be allowed the same "perks" as a hetro couple you should be allowed to.
Please don't ban gay marriage in Minnesota, it will be almost impossible to reverse later.....

This Minnesotan wants to see anyone in a committed relationship able to gain the legal protections and civil rights of marriage. How can I help?

(cont) small part of marriage. A child doesn't become a 2nd rate citizen just because they love the same sex. You are given a child of which anyone would be proud...they don't lie; they don't cheat; they don't steal; they are ethical, kind & caring - but you find out they are gay & all of a sudden all the good things are trumped by the person whom they love???? Unconditional Love is what you are supposed to have for your child. This miracle that you bore is all of a sudden not good enough to be able to spend the rest of their lives in a relationship like your own? If there are straight marriages that last for 2 years and gay relationships that have lasted for 25 - then how would their marriage after 25 years hurt marriage???? Divorce hurts marriage. Infidelity hurts marriage. The only 2 people who can destroy marriage are the 2 people in it.

Thank you Steve for another great article. The video was touching. And good for this loving couple for having a child. Some people do not approve of gays having children. Homosexuality is not contagious.

Like the Beatles song "All you need is Love." We need more love in the world--who cares where it comes from--it is all good.

The stories that I found most compelling were the Reitan family & Denny Smith (more videos can be seen here). Both of them expressed the WHY should they be able to be married. Both families have gay sons. They love ALL their children gay & straight and want for all their children the same things that every parent wants. They want them to be loved, to find someone whom they want to spend the rest of their lives with and be happy - the same way THEY have been happy. Families, just like good marriages are about LOVE & COMMITMENT. That doesn't change just because someone is gay. You want your son or your daughter to be able to commit & marry the person they love. For some reason there are those who see GAY & freak out if their child told them they were. They wold disown them or try to pray it out of them or they would force them to marry someone of the opposite sex. All this is done for the sake of the parent - not the child. Unconditional love is accepting of all faults. How selfish would a parent be to deny a child the right to love someone of their choosing? To wish upon them a life where they didn't have the same rights to file jointly, to receive survivor's benefits, in some cases to have the partner they love die without them, or to even access basic needs? In some cases gay people can be fired just for being gay - do you wish a life like that for your child????
Just can't wrap my mind around that. Sex & the expression of intimacy is s
