New Report on Greyhound Racing in the U.K. Exposes Drugs and Disappearances

In an effort to protect greyhounds from needless suffering and death in the UK, GREY2K USA Worldwide and the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) have partnered up to bring attention to the need for long overdue reform within the racing industry with a new report highlighting the misery racing brings these dogs and the trouble with its self-regulation.

In 2006, an exposé in the Sunday Times prompted by an industry whistleblower exposed a chilling secret: more than 10,000 healthy greyhounds had been killed and buried in a mass grave over a period of 15 years simply because they were unwanted.

Despite national outcry and government inquiries that resulted in calls to make changes and improve welfare for greyhounds, little has been done to actually change things for them, and the industry has essentially been left to self-regulate.

While the industry has seen a steady decline, there are still 33 operational tracks in the U.K. Of those, 24 are regulated by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), while the others are run independently and are not licensed or subject to the same rules as the others.

In what the two organizations are calling the first comprehensive report on greyhound racing from a humane perspective, they highlight numerous issues that greyhounds are left facing today from abuse and neglect to disappearances and early deaths.

“Self regulation doesn’t work; thousands of dogs are still suffering and dying every year,” said Joe Duckworth, Chief Executive of the LACS. “The industry has had its chance to reform, now it is time to act. The Government should introduce independent scrutiny of the industry and if that does not end the cruelty greyhound racing should be banned.”

Some of the problems they’ve exposed in their report include overworking dogs, who are confined to small kennels for 95 percent of their lives, dogs testing positive for drugs including cocaine, steroids, amphetamines and barbituates and serious and fatal injuries suffered on poorly maintained tracks, among other things.

More troubling is the overbreeding of dogs, with many going unaccounted for. According to the report, the industry is responsible for generating at least 8,000 dogs who need homes every year, while 1,000 of them have virtually disappeared into thin air and can’t be accounted for.

While there are organizations like the Retired Greyhound Trust working to rehome many of them, others aren’t so lucky. As it stands no one is required to prove they’ve rehomed a dog while some in the industry decide to profit off of unwanted dogs by selling them to universities in the U.K. and Ireland where they’re used and killed for research.

While they note that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has already committed to reviewing regulations next year, GREY2K and LACS are calling on Parliament and petitioning DEFRA to take immediate action to implement regulations that will address these issues or shut down the industry because it can’t continue at its current rate with such little regard for the welfare of these dogs.
