No, Trump Doesn’t Care About National Park Service

Have you heard that Donald Trump donated his first government paycheck to the National Park Service?

Before you applaud this move, however, it’s worth taking another look at the budget the Trump administration recently posed: he wants Congress to cut the Department of the Interior’s funds by 12 percent, for a total of $1.6 billion.

Sign the petition – President Trump: Keep your check, you hypocrite. Restore Park Service funding instead.

Since the National Park Service is run by the Interior Department, this means that our national parks are going to suffer in the years ahead; the $78,333 check Trump has donated is but a drop in the bucket to make up for the impending cuts.

Crunching the numbers, Salon points out that it would take Trump’s next 20,425 paychecks to make up for his cut. Furthermore, to receive all those paychecks, Trump would have to stay in the office another 5,000+ years – that part’s obviously not allowed by the Constitution, yet you never know with Trump.

If Trump actually cared about national parks, that should have been reflected in his budget. Don’t be fooled by a public gesture designed to portray Trump – a man who is pushing for oil pipeline projects – as someone who cares about nature.

It’s clear the White House wanted media attention for this donation. Press Secretary Sean Spicer handed over the check (with a large projection of the check being displayed in the background so no one could miss it) in front of a room full of journalists.

Spicer said, “The president is personally proud to contribute the first quarter of his salary to the important mission of the Park Service, which is preserving our country’s national security.”

Eh, sorry, but what do parks service have to do with national security? While it’s possible that Spicer accidentally said “national security” where he meant to say “national resources,” it’s also hard to ignore that the interior secretary, who accepted the check, indicated that it would be used to fix up the historical battle sites under the National Park Service’s purview.

As Mother Jones points out, though, the Interior Department has already had to put off an estimated $229 million in maintenance costs on these battlefields so, again, that $78,333 check is about 3000 times too small to address those needs.

Although few people would object to restoring historical landmarks, it is interesting that this pro-war administration seems to want to emphasize those over natural park space.

Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that the new Interior Secretary is Ryan Zinke, a former Navy Seal, who gets overwhelmingly low ratings from conservation groups. Though Zinke previously supported the government addressing climate change, more recently he said there is no evidence of climate change existing.

Returning to Trump, let’s not give the president too much credit for “selflessly” donating his government salary. That might be more impressive if he had actually extricated himself from his business ties, but by all accounts, Trump and his family are ignoring conflict of interest rules in order to continue to profit from their business ventures while in the White House.

Let’s not forget that Trump is also taking regular vacations to Mar-a-Lago at a cost to taxpayers of about $3 million per trip. Giving up a three-month salary of $78,333 while deciding to take million dollar trips each weekend on the American citizens’ dime sure doesn’t seem like a sacrifice.

If you agree that Trump’s gesture is empty and he could make a bigger statement by restoring the Nation Park Service’s funding, be sure to sign the Care2 petition.

John W, do you have any proof that if Hillary had been elected we would be on the verge of WW3 ? Of course not so maybe you should just knock off the terrible hypocritical Hillary nonsense. No buddy knows anything but what we're told, and then individual perception and past indoctrination comes into play. I tend to think you're just another troll here to stir up ill will waste people's time. Trump is so obviously unqualified to be president of our country it's amazing anyone can even find people to pay defend him.

Marianne C,

The UK already pays it's fair share towards NATO.

As for the rest of that diatribe you wrote, got any proof?
Didn't think so.

Oh, and I am glad it's President Trump and not that awful Hypocritical Hillary character. If she had been President we would now be on the verge of World War Three if not in it now.

And knock it off with the Trump is literally Hitler nonsense.

How much personal salary did the bloviators like Mary, Marianne, and Kevin give to the National Parks Service......Unlike Trump, Zero.

It's so easy for liberals claim their compassionate, when it's someone else's money they are sequestering.

Mary B.,
I think you summed it up rather nicely. You love Obama, but hate Trump.

@ John W:

If you wanted America to be a strong, reliable, and dependable ally, you would not want a madman at the helm, driving the entire country onto the rocks in his quest to line his own filthy pocket. You would not want a disreputable despot turning the country into a sick, twisted dynasty by hiring his own incompetent offspring and their equally incompetent spouses to do the work of diplomacy and governance.

You wouldn't want a modern day wanna Hitler who actually doesn't think al that much of y'all in Merry Olde.

So your NATO argument may be a bit lame.

You might want to remember that you are really no good to him. You have no oil to steal. You have no cheap labor for him to offshore manufacturing to. Your women don't like being sexually assaulted any better than ours do. All he might want from you is the Crown Jewels -- and the chance to turn Buck House into a cheap & tasteless gold tinsel casino/brothel to service his Russian backers.

Remember the bill he tried to hand to Angela Merkel for the US participating in NATO? He's got one for you, too -- and he's actually not joking. He wants you to PAY us for being in NATO -- which he would really rather abandon.

Supporting anything and anybody but America's progressive majority will get you nothing but another world war. Maybe you want that; most of us here don't.
