Paul Ryan, Remove Nunes From Intelligence Committee

On Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan calling on him to boot U.S. Representative Devin Nunes from his role on the House Intelligence Committee. After all of the shenanigans Nunes has pulled from his position of power as chairman, it is long past time for him to be formally removed.

That’s why the Care2 community is joining in on signing this new petition urging Paul Ryan to remove Nunes from his committee. Tell Speaker Ryan to restore order by getting rid of this dangerously partisan leader.

In her letter, Pelosi called Nunes “dishonest” and said he “disgraced” the entire committee. “The integrity of the House is at stake,” Pelosi wrote. “Put an end to this charade and hold Congressman Nunes and all Congressional Republicans accountable to the oath they have taken to support and defend the Constitution.”

To understand why Nunes is in hot water, it’s important to be familiar with the infamous “secret memo” that House Republicans released today with Trump’s appoval. It is a divisive piece of propaganda that deliberately misrepresents the truth in order to make it look like the U.S. government is unfairly conspiring against President Donald Trump.

The FBI and Trump’s own Justice Department appointees have discouraged Nunes from releasing this memo since, in addition to its inaccuracies, it contains classified information. The FBI has even vowed to publicly dispute the memo if it is released.

Nevertheless, Nunes’s Republican peers voted to release the memo anyway, while simultaneously not agreeing to release a Democratic memo that contextualizes and offers rebuttals to the Republican document.

Since then, we learned from Rep. Adam Schiff that Nunes covertly altered the memo before giving it to the Trump administration to study prior to its release. That poses both a big question and a big problem. The question: Why did Nunes take it upon himself to edit the memo on Trump’s behalf? The problem: It shouldn’t have been release now that it’s significantly different than the ones his Republican colleagues approved a few days ago.

We’ve also learned that the White House may have collaborated with Nunes to create the memo in the first place. Representative Mike Quigley asked Nunes if the White House had been involved in drafting the memo and Nunes avoided the question. Asked again, Nunes declined to answer. The answer to that query should have been a simple “no,” not a total dodge.

It looks terrible for Nunes, particularly when you consider that he already had to recuse himself from the House’s investigation on Russian collusion when he was caught going to the White House to view classified documents on the matter (as if that were an appropriate venue to do that.) Despite the recusal, he continued to lead the House Intelligence Committee in running interference to cast doubt on the Russian investigation.

At this point, Nunes is ignoring the FBI, the Justice Department, and common sense to promote a series of conspiracy theories in an effort to obstruct justice. There’s no question he’s not suited for his role leading the House Intelligence Committee.

Take Action

So far, Ryan’s response to the call to eject Nunes has been, “I think [the Democrats]’re just playing politics and I think they’re looking for a political distraction.” That’s a terrible way to frame the problem while Nunes is most definitely trying to cast his own distraction; if he continues to take no action, he is entirely complicit in Nunes’s anti-American agenda.

That doesn’t mean that a loud outcry from the public couldn’t change Ryan’s mind on this matter, however. Let’s put pressure on the speaker to do the right thing by signing this petition.

"Nunes" and "intelligence"? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

PaulAynRandRyan needs to step down as Speaker of the House. Ryan is as much to blame as Nunce, Ryan should have removed Nunce as Chair of the “Intelligence Committee” last year when it was learned that Nunce was briefing Tweetolini. Nunce is not the only Trump/Putin sycophant and traitor, Ryan is along with 99% of the Cons in Congress.

Pelosi calls Nunes dishonest. Like Pelosi who takes millions from our criminal healthcare industry, and refuses to support Medicare for All, has any room to talk.

Rhoberta E Bernie Sanders would at least fight for progressive policies that we desperately need in this country like Medicare for All, unlike most of the corporate Democrats like Nancy Pelosi who is very wealthy and refuses to support Medicare for All, because she is corrupt like the Republicans. Of course the Republicans are going to fight a progressive like Bernie Sanders, on every issue, but at least he'll fight for progressive policies that we need in this country, unlike the corporate Democrats you support who are in bed with Wall Street, and as corrupt as the Republicans. Calling anyone who criticizes corrupt corporate Democrats like Adam Schiff a Trump supporter is getting old, and makes you lose credibility. We all understand Trump is a crook, and we want him gone, but oppose him on his bad policies, and stop wasting time on this phony nothingburger Russia investigation. Over 30,0000 people die in this country, because we don't have Medicare for All, so lets instead investigate why most of the Democrats are corrupt like Diane Feinstein, and refuse to support Medicare for All. That's much more important than obsessing about Russia.

I didn't realize until today with your Adam Schiff comment that you are a true trump supporter and most likely DO watch fox news. Almost immediately after a comment on fox (it was replayed on most other news outlets) idiot trump had to tweet about "Little Adam Schiff calling him a liar and leaking sensitive information.
This isn't ABOUT Russia per se . It's about this president , his family and cabinet lying and destroying your democratic process. You should be concerned even as a republican. Then idiot trump calls Americans "treasonous" because the Democrats wouldn't kiss his huge butt during the speech.
brian, unless things change drastically in your government, Mr. Sanders even wouldn't have a hope in heck of getting things done without a majority government and even then the republicans would cross him at every turn and label him a socialist just like david does here. Ms. Stein isn't even likable and doesn't have a strong platform other than being a "green party"
In stead of trashing everyone here you could be positive and use this platform for good instead of being SO annoying

Rhoberta E The Democrats want you to believe that Trump and the Republicans who colluded with the Russians are our problem. The reality is that the reason we have this fraud Trump is because of the failure and corruption in the Democratic party that rigged the primary for Bernie Sanders to lose. Think about how bad Hillary and the Democrats and their corruption had to be in order for the American people to choose this crook Trump as even remotely an alternative. Trump and the Republicans are terrible, but the solution is not the equally corrupt Democrats. The solution is to reject both of these corrupt corporate owned parties, and vote for Jill Stein, and force a third party.
