Pennsylvania Republicans Aren’t Done Cheating Yet

You know the old saying: “If you can’t beat ‘em in court, get rid of the judges.”

Okay, the good news is that isn’t really an old expression. The bad news is that it is becoming the mantra for a lot of Republican state legislators desperate to hold on to power.

Most recently, some conservatives in Pennsylvania have decided to wage war on most of the state’s Supreme Court justices. Representative Cris Dush is actively calling on his peers to sign on to articles of impeachment directed at five of the seven judges sitting on the bench.

Pray tell, what did these justices do? Well, they had the audacity to rule that Pennsylvania’s heavily gerrymandered congressional maps had to be redrawn in a less partisan fashion. Republicans have been enjoying the cushy advantage they manipulated for themselves with this map, and they’d rather toss out the judges that return to a more balanced map with competitive elections.

It’s no secret why the Pennsylvania GOP wants to keep the map: With cleverly drawn lines, the party has managed to win 13 out of 18 U.S. congressional seats even in years where Democrats got the overall majority of the votes. In the last election, Republicans took over two-thirds of the state legislative spots, even though Trump won by less than a percentage point.

After the ruling by the state Supreme Court, the GOP appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to strike it down, to no avail. The Republican Party also pled for extensions for redrawing the map, hoping to make it impossible to have the new map go into effect this year, however officials have said the changes must occur in enough time for the important midterm elections.

Apparently, Rep. Dush is willing to make one last desperate act to maintain the GOP’s unwarrantedly large power. Since it takes two-thirds of state legislators to impeach a state official, a threshold that Pennsylvania Republicans hold for the moment, they can quickly get rid of the judges who ruled against them to hopefully ensure that the deck remains stacked in their favor.

It’s probably a stretch to think that Dush would manage to get that many conservatives to join in on this unscrupulous plan and impeach judges simply because they ruled in a way that made elections more fair. Then again, these same legislators have been completely complicit in rigging the system so they take a disproportionate amount of power, so why stop now?

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania isn’t the only state where the Republican Party is coming after judges that have ruled against them. Having suffered a number of defeats in North Carolina courts, GOP legislators in that state are changing judicial districts and laws to better ensure that conservative judges dominate the bench. Rather than the judicial branch serving as a check and balance to the legislative branch, the lawmakers want to make judges subservient to them.

While most Americans put a lot of faith in our democratic institutions, what we’re seeing here is that Republicans are willing to toss aside conventions and decency in order to rig and chat their way into power.

There are liars/cheaters in the democratic party and there are liars/cheaters in the Republican party. Apparently amongst the voters of both parties we have "adults" that are also in the "elementary school " party. 😒😞

Unfortunately, nationwide, and at all levels, republicans aren’t done cheating yet.
