Republicans Are Mad Sessions Lied About Marijuana, But Are Fine With Perjury

Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado is pissed. The Republican says he received a personal assurance from Jeff Sessions before he was confirmed as attorney general that he would not interfere with state marijuana laws.

As we now know, Sessions is not sticking to that pledge. On Thursday, Sessions said he would be rescinding policies developed under the Obama administration that allowed weed industries to develop in certain states.

Gardner is not alone in his fury about this abrupt about-face. U.S. Representative Mike Coffman promised to do ďeverything [he] can to protect that right from the power of an overreaching federal government.Ē Fellow Coloradoan Representative Scott Tipton also expressed anger at Sessions for failing to live up to his word.

Legislators from other states are expressing outrage, too. In California, where legalized weed just took effect a few days ago, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher blasted Sessions for doing the will of the drug cartels. In Nevada where legal pot also is a recent addition, Senator Dean Heller encouraged Sessions to recommit himself to statesí rights.

After being told the Trump administration would take a hands-off approach to marijuana laws, these legislators are furious they were lied to. Thatís understandable, but where was that anger when Sessions demonstrably and repeatedly perjured himself last year?

Itís embarrassing and unethical to have a perjurer lead the Department of Justice, but Republicans willfully chose to overlook these lies because they never wanted to discover the truth about the Trump campaignís potential collusion with Russia anyway. Now that Sessions misled Congress about marijuana, however, now is the time for outrage, apparently.

Donít get me wrong, I support the marijuana legalization effortÖ but who knew Republicans loved marijuana so much, anyway? Arguably, itís conservative legislators who have held the movement back for this long, yet now that theyíre discovering what an economic boon it can be for their states, theyíre singing a different tune.

For once, Trump isnít escaping these Republicansí wrath either. Although Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tried to walk back Trumpís previous statements about pot being an issue for the states, the legislators know heís lying, too.

By some counts, Trump has lied to the American people nearly 2,000 times in his first year in office. None of that seemed to matter to certain congressional Republicans, however, until Trump lied about marijuana.

Unlike a lot of political vitriol, some Republicans are expressing that theyíll actually punish the president over this issue. Gardner vowed to block every DOJ nomination until Sessions recommits himself to the promise he originally made regarding marijuana enforcement.

Again, I support Gardnerís stance on marijuana, but now Iím getting almost as outraged at him. Not because I think blocking nominations is a bad tactic, but because there have been hundreds of other legitimate issues that the GOP should have put some pressure on the president in the past year, yet Gardner didnít see fit to do anything of the sort until now? Where are his priorities?

Vox writer Matthew Yglesias agrees, writing, ďGardnerís actions today are a reminder that the GOP legislative caucus hasnít forgotten how to use its powers of office Ė itís simply decided not to.Ē

This administration has been breaking promises all year Ė itís soul-crushing to see that this one was the first that members of the GOP actually care about.

Take Action

Legalizing marijuana is the right thing to do. It’s high time lawmakers got off the sidelines and finally ended costly, racist, and cruel prohibition on marijuana. Sign this Care2 petition demanding the legalization of marijuana now.

Pam w Just because I criticize a Democrat like Diane Feinstein, who refuses to support marijuan legalization and Medicare for all, because she is corrupt like the Republicans, doesn't mean I am a bot. Many Democrats are corrupt like the Republicans, and it's time for people like you to admit it. Most of the Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, are refusing to support Medicare for all, because they are corrupt like the Republicans. Clearly you and Rhoberta E are trolls, who work for the corrupt DNC, that cheated Bernie Sanders out of his primary, and caused this fraud Trump to be elected.

I signed the petition. Republicans are hypocrites and really don't support things that will not personally benefit them.
