Republicans in Congress Don’t Want to Spend More on Election Security – Any Guess Why?

Ask anyone in the federal government – well, aside from President Donald Trump, bless his compromised heart – and they’ll tell you that Russia is trying to influence and hack U.S. elections. Not only is it clear they took steps in 2016, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats says that he has every indication that they’ll be doing it again in the upcoming midterms.

So… what are we going to do about it? Not much, apparently!

On Thursday, Democrats in the House of Representatives proposed that the U.S. allocate more money toward election security. It seems like a sensible idea, yet the Republican majority shot down that idea.

The GOP’s argument is that there already is funding for election security, so the extra spending is unnecessary. That position fails to take into account how much more sophisticated the Russians’ methods for hacking into our voting systems has become. We know that the Kremlin attempted to access voting systems in just about every state, succeeding in several of them.

Every state in the nation has requested additional funds from the federal government to make their respective systems more secure in the electronic age. Alas, the existing money earmarked for these purposes doesn’t stretch far enough, with some states already acknowledging they won’t be able to swear by the next election’s security or accuracy.

Very little can be considered more sacred in a democracy than secure and accurate vote counts. Congress has an obligation not just to help ensure this security, but to offer citizens sufficient assurance that our votes are protected from attacks so that faith in the results stands.

“Surely we can rise above pandering to party and Putin to act on behalf of our elections,” said Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, trying to drum up bipartisan support. “We have sworn an oath to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

During the debate, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan countered, “I know what we need for safe and secure elections, and that’s voter ID.”  I’ll tell you what, Jim – Russia isn’t using fake identities to alter election results; this is cyber-warfare. Ah, but can we really expect that a guy who allegedly enabled sexual assaults while serving a coach at Ohio State to speak up about issues that matter?

Why are Republicans so apathetic toward protecting the electoral process? Sadly, that’s practically a rhetorical question at this point. Deep down, Republicans expect that if Russia is successful at amplifying its efforts to influence U.S. elections. With the speculated “blue wave” approaching in November, that outside “intervention” might even be what saves their jobs!

Normally that’d seem like a terrible accusation, but after watching the GOP’s stances on voting rights over the years (cutting early voting, voter ID requirements, purging voter rolls, gerrymandering,) it’s become painfully clear that Republicans care more for a system that favors their side rather than one where everyone’s voice is heard and counted.

Julie W, what does your government do if you choose not to vote? Go to jail. Sounds like a really free country.

Mike k You're brainwashed and think the Democrats can win by using the same failed strategy of being Republican light, and anointing corrupt corporate establishment Democrats like Hillary. You haven't learned the lessons of this last election. The Democrats need to go left, embrace progressive policies like Medicare for all, free colleges, and marijuana legalization, and allow Bernie Sanders to lead the party, or they will lose to Trump again in 2020. Bernie Sanders told the Democrats to end their corruption, and embrace progressive policies. Unless the Democrats do that, they will lose to Trump again in 2020.

Bernie did change the Dem party so that their platform has all the things he advised but not good enough I guess for some, so we got Trump who is far far to the other side of Bernie. Don't let the enemy of the good be the perfect.

Mike Kelly Yes Bernie told us to vote Blue because he was forced to and had no choice after running democrat than to support the party. But that doesn't mean that we have forgotten what he intended to do and his core message and that is change the face of the democratic party and we can't do that by blindly supporting corporate democrats who fight tooth and nail to prevent any real change or any real progress.
