Sarah Palin (Rightfully!) Criticizes Anti-Hunting Hypocrisy

It’s not often that I agree with Sarah Palin on anything. But when she called out the hypocrisy of some of her critics on Twitter this week, I had to give her a little bit of a nod.

Sarah Palin is currently starring in a television show on TLC called “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” and in the lead up to Monday’s episode about hunting caribou, Palin was fired up on social networking sites like Twitter lambasting what she called “anti-hunting hypocrisy.”

Monday afternoon she posted “Unless you’ve never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight’s episode.”  The only part of that sentiment I don’t agree with is the idea that your past actions invalidate current opinions. The fact that I ate meat growing up doesn’t render my current commitment to veganism less valid.

What I do agree with is the fact that people who eat meat and wear leather are in no position to criticize hunters like Sarah Palin. The misery endured by the animals raised for human consumption is enormous.  Hunting is a disgusting bloodsport in which animals are murdered at long range by humans with high-powered rifles and scopes, who claim that they’re helping to conserve nature.

But in order to take a unified, consistent stand against hunting, we need to ensure that we’re not contributing to the suffering of animals before we criticize other people for hurting animals. The suffering of all animals is interlinked–it’s impossible to abhor one kind of suffering while actively supporting another. Veganism is a commitment to ending all forms of violence and torture toward animals.

By being vegan, we not only make sure that we are not supporting the suffering of animals, we are forming a consistent moral standard by which we can work toward freeing all living beings from imprisonment, torture and murder.

There’s nothing natural, noble, or sporting about hunting, and Sarah Palin’s brazen endorsement of hunting is among the most reprehensible aspects of her character. But she is right to say that hunting animals is no more cruel or inhumane than eating meat, dairy or eggs.

If you’re outraged by “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” or by any of the other horrifying torture committed against animals, go vegan. Take a stand against all forms of murder and torture of all animals great and small.

@ Janet... i know that wildlife is full of hunting and that's life in it's purest. But we must criticize when someone does it for fun, not for need and uses guns and helicopter instead of their own hands! It's a "little" unfair! don't you think?

Did that ditzy broad land the plane, set up camp and eat the whole caribou? She's a sham and so is this reasoning. It was advertising, that's all and sickening at that

Sarah Palin should be the prey. How would she survive being shot at from a helicopter or plane? She is one of the many monsters who condone the destruction of helpless animals. I'm so tired of this . . . of writing, and signing petitions. What else can be done?

SORRY, NO LEVEL OF JUSTIFICATION IS SEEN BY ME. ONE'S "INTENT" TO KILL A LIVING BEING IS A SOFTER BLOW BECAUSE ONE CALL'S OUT HYPOCRICY UPON OTHERS; THAT DESERVES POSITIVE RECOGNITION...? SPIN, SPIN, AND MORE SPIN.

@ CHRIS B FIRST OFF BLOOD COMES FROM THE MEAT BUT WE COOK THE MEAT WHICH GETS RID OF THE BLOOD.IT CLEARLY SAYS IN THE KING JAMES BIBLE NOT TO EAT THE FLESH WHICH IS THE BLOOD. AS FOR THE BREAD & WINE BEING THE BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST I GREW UP IN THE LUTHERN FAITH & WE USED REAL WINE BUT I'M NOW A BAPTIST & WE DON'T USE REAL WINE SO I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH EITHER. AS FOR THE CAPS SHOUTING THING LIKE I SAID IF YOU WANT TO CONSIDER IT SHOUTING THEN THATS FINE BUT I JUST DON'T HAPPEN TO AGREE WITH IT BUT THAT DON'T MAKE ME DIFFERENT.AS FOR PALIN BECOMING PRESIDENT I THINK SHE WILL HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT THAN ANIMALS & I BELIEVE SHE CAN PULL US OUT OF THIS MESS OBAMA HAS CREATED. AND IF YOU GO BACK & REREAD WHAT I WROTE I SAID I DON'T AGREE WITH KILLING WOLVES JUST TO KILL THEM SO THERE ARE MORE DEER ECT. AND I CERTANLY DON'T AGREE WITH USING CHOPPERS TO DO THAT. IF THEY WANT TO KILL WOLVES THEN USE 4 WHEELERS TO GIVE THE WOLVES A BETTER CHANCE TO EXCAPE. BUT ME I SAY LEAVE THE WOLVES ALONE, & ONLY HUNT WHAT YOUR GOING TO EAT.

How I wonder is meat divorced from blood or is this another example of wilful ignorance of simple biology. Besides in the Christian context the last commandment of Jesus given at The Last Supper was to eat and drink his body and blood in remembrance of Him thus instituting the Mass, Eucharist or Holy Communion depending on the branch of Christianity one follows. Those that believe in transubstantiation (the changing of the elements of bread and wine into flesh and blood) being one part of the mix to those that will only use unfermented wine as the blood because they have an aversion to alcohol do to their particular brand of Christianity and don't believe in the literal Biblical approbation. Some traditions have modified these actions to include or not include the various elements for consumption by the faithful However blood prohibition is primarily not of the Christian Bible or New Testament, As to using caps in on line communication it is normal to consider this as shouting ones comments so I can only assume Janet either likes shouting or likes to feel she is different. It is a fairly common agreement that Sarah Palin is a self serving wind bag and as such not much different to the average politician around the world! However given the fickle nature of the electorate her election to any position of power would be a disaster for the planet and animals in particular as her motives are entirely selfish and dictatorially fascist in nature! Does she eat wolf meat or waste it!

UGH!! Keep this crazy bitch off my T.V., laptop and newspapers & magazines. And by the way, don't generalize the hypocrisy of meat eaters vs hunters. No, it is NOT the same thing. I myself am vegan so I'm not condoning meat. But domestic animals raised for food, are just that. When hunting, one upsets the balance of predator to prey ratios. You are essentially competing for the same food sources as the indigenous and much needed predators. I think it's just another way for hunters to clear their consciences, and justify their brutal actions. And perhaps it's a way of dodging the wrath of anti-hunters. Nice try, but I ain't buyin' it.......

@ PAM M WHY WOULD YOU SAY SOMEONE WHO IS WEALTHY SHOULDN'T HUNT. JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE WEALTH DON'T MEAN THEY SHOULDN'T HUNT. DON'T YOU RELIZE THAT WILD GAME IS SO MUCH BETTER MEAT THAN ANYTHING YOU CAN GET IN ANY STORE WHICH IS SHOT FULL OF HORMONES ECT.
