Success! Trump’s Military Parade Has Been Cancelled

No one in the nation had much enthusiasm for Donald Trump’s planned military parade, aside from the president himself, of course. Over 70,000 Care2 members signed a petition calling on the president to put a stop to this needless extravagance, and there’s great news – the parade has been cancelled.

When reports leaked this week that the federal government now expected for the parade to cost $92 million, the White House had an even more difficult time justifying the purpose of this parade in the first place.

Soon after, Trump tried to save face by acting like it was his idea to not have the parade anymore, asserting that he cancelled the event slated for November 10 due to the unfair costs.

“The local politicians who run Washington, D.C. (poorly) know a windfall when they see it,” tweeted Trump. “When asked to give us a price for holding a great celebratory military parade, they wanted a number so ridiculously high that I cancelled it.”

He proceeded to namedrop a couple of other military parades – one of which is in Paris – that he would be attending in the upcoming months instead. What a relief this must be to the American people to know that this infantile president will still get his fix of watching tanks roll down the street.

As for Trump’s blaming D.C. politicians, Mayor Muriel Bowser admitted that she provided the White House with a $21.6 million estimate to hold the event (well above Trump’s initial estimate) and tried to discourage it due to the expense for taxpayers.

Nevertheless, it’s not fair to put this failure on the mayor and her peers because the real expense was coming from the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security who estimated a combined $92 million would need to be spent on transporting military equipment, security, various aircraft maneuvers and bringing in loads of military personnel to march.

Unfortunately, while the parade is cancelled this year, it may not be the last time we hear about it from Trump. He noted that he may be able to swing one in 2019 “when the cost comes WAY DOWN.” It’s not remotely clear why he believes it would be significantly less expensive to host the event in a subsequent year.

In the meantime, Trump has suggested the money saved on not hosting the parade can be spent on “more jet fighters.” Sigh – that’s precisely the reason we never needed a military parade in the first place. The American war budget is pointlessly massive and we already display our military supremacy by inserting ourselves into conflicts around the globe.

The American Legion released a statement saying any potential parade money would be better allocated to veterans’ causes – at least until all troops serving overseas have returned to the United States.

Anyway, thanks to all of the petition signers who made their opinions on the military parade clear and were pivotal in pressuring Trump to back off – even if he wants to claim it was his own decision. May the parade go the same route as his similarly unpopular border wall where he keeps pretending it will happen “someday” even though no one wants to foot the bill.

I'm so glad trump didn't get his way on holding his parade. It was a very bad idea overall, and he would probably have wanted his "fine" white nationalist friends to march in it with their tiki torches.
