Success! Twitter Finally Bans Alex Jones and InfoWars Permanently

Last month we learned that after a long struggle, Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and far-right broadcaster, was finally banned from YouTube, Apple, Facebook and Spotify.

A Care2 petition had generated more than 20,000 signatures asking to make this happen; but meanwhile, Twitter refused to remove Alex Jones and his InfoWars from their platform.

I was angry that this dangerous man had open access to Twitter, so I created a second Care2 petition, demanding that Twitter also remove Jones and his InfoWars immediately.

As a reminder, here are a few of the hateful things Jones has said and done. Absolutely the worst is his perpetration of the idea that the Sandy Hook massacre of schoolchildren and educators was a fabrication. As a result, the parents of six-year-old Noah Pozner, who was murdered in the mass school shooting in December, 2012, have been forced to move seven times as they are pursued by Jones’s followers.

Jones has also declared 9/11 to be an inside job, pushed the theory that the Parkland survivors are really “crisis actors” and declared it an incontrovertible fact that three million undocumented people voted in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Success!

Over 16,000 Care2 members signed my petition and on September 6, we learned that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had finally relented and “permanently suspended” Jones and his InfoWars outlet.

A huge shout-out to all the activists who have been working to get Jones removed from Twitter and especially to the Care2 members who signed my petition.

Dorsey tweeted, “Today, we permanently suspended @realalexjones and @infowars from Twitter and Periscope. We took this action based on new reports of Tweets and videos posted yesterday that violate our abusive behavior policy, in addition to the accounts’ past violations.”

One of those abusive behaviors happened when Jones confronted and harassed Florida Senator Marco Rubio outside a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing. Another showed Jones berating CNN journalist Olivier Darcy between two congressional hearings on social media, describing him as “a possum that climbed out of the rear of a dead cow” and referring to his “skinny jeans.”

So Jack Dorsey has finally followed in the footsteps of YouTube, Apple, Facebook and Spotify, and has also declared that Twitter will monitor other accounts that might be linked to Jones and take immediate action if Jones tries to get around the ban.

The demand to ban Alex Jones and his InfoWars is not just about his dangerous and hate-filled conspiracy theories.

With over 900,000 followers on Twitter and around 430,000 on InfoWars, Jones had built a huge empire, based on his ability to appeal to a largely white male audience and convince them that the government or other big institutions was out to get them. The apocalypse was near, he warned, and the only way to survive was by buying items like his armor, guns, testosterone boosters and bodybuilding pills and powders.

In other words, he was selling products to assuage the fears that he himself was so good at stoking in his followers.

His true believers didn’t just soak up his conspiracy theories, they also bought his products. In 2014, Jones’s profit from his business was over $20 million; His followers have provided him with a lavish lifestyle, which hopefully will now be over.

Congratulations to everyone who signed the Care2 petition, helping to bring about Jack Dorsey’s decision to ban Jones and his InfoWars.

This is a huge victory in the battle for truth against the spectre of fake news.

If you’re inspired by this success and want to raise awareness about an injustice, why not join your fellow Care2 users and create your own petition? Soon you’ll the vibrant Care2 community signing up to support you!
