The President Just Implied a Female Senator Is a Whore

At this point, President Donald Trump has tweeted so many inflammatory things that it’s almost futile to declare his latest tweet is his most offensive yet. However, in the case of his Tuesday morning tweet about Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, he very well may have topped himself in awfulness.

On Monday, Sen. Gillibrand expressed that she thought Trump should resign from office. “These allegations are credible; they are numerous,” she said on CNN. “I’ve heard these women’s testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking.”

Trump, who is not known for handling these situations with poise, responded the following morning with a disgusting tweet:

Let’s not let Trump play ignorant like he did after saying Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out her wherever.” He knows damn well what he implied when he said Gillibrand “would do anything” for campaign contributions. Trump should get no leniency for suggesting a senator is a whore out of spite.

By going there, Trump is cementing his legacy as a rampant misogynist. Despite there being other male senators who called on Trump to resign this week (Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley,) he focused his attack on the woman and threw in a sexually demeaning comment.

There is some un-humorous irony in the fact that Trump decided to respond to Gillibrand’s concerns about his sexual misconduct by quite literally harassing her with a sexualized statement. If he thinks he’s in any way vindicating himself with this form of attack, he’s sorely mistaken.

Although Trump’s tweet should be dismissed out of hand, for the record, Gillibrand’s people say she met with the now-president just once, back in 2010. Apparently, Ivanka Trump also attended the meeting. The notion that Gillibrand would debase herself by offering sexual favors for what amounted to a $4,800 donation – in front of the man’s daughter, no less – is ludicrous.

Gillibrand responded to Trump’s tweet with a statement that was much classier than his: “You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, who was similarly aghast at Trump’s tweet, responded with a message of her own: “Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame Senator Gillibrand? Do you know who you’re picking a fight with? Good luck with that, Donald Trump.”

Warren is absolutely correct – Gillibrand has devoted a large portion of her congressional career to calling out the prevalence of sexual assault in the military. Gillibrand isn’t latching onto a convenient excuse to pick a partisan fight with the president, she’s a genuine advocate for people who have been sexually harassed.

Republicans have thus far largely defended Trump, if not denying the allegations on his behalf, at least arguing that many of the claims were made during the campaign therefore the voters already spoke on this issue. However, voters do not have the ability to absolve Trump on sexual assault charges.

Trump’s own behavior, with this latest tweet very much included, is all the evidence anyone needs to understand his pattern of attacking and dismissing women. Is it really a stretch to think that the women making the allegations are telling the truth? The calls for Trump’s resignation are only most justified following his tweet.

He's disrespectful of all women (with the possible exception of his daughter). To Trump, women have blood coming out of wherever. We're a nice piece of ass. If we're flat-chested, we'll never be a "10". It's okay to grab our pussy.

Ugh. How many times will I sign the same petition before there's some action toward impeachment?
