Trump Doesn’t Understand How the Postal Service or Community College Works

Since the president is in charge of overseeing policy on so many issues in this country, it’d be helpful if Donald Trump had a basic understanding of how some of our longstanding and beloved institutions work. However, on Thursday, Trump demonstrated a lack of understanding on both community colleges and the postal service, leaving citizens to wonder how he can make sound decisions when he’s so uninformed.

In a speech in Ohio, Trump told a crowd, “I dont know what that means, a community college.

Hold on a second, Trump doesn’t know what community college means? This is a man who had a quote unquote “university” he should know the function of a community college, though that may help explain why his institution was so fraudulent. I’d suggest he ask his Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos for a briefing, but she doesn’t seem to understand education, either.

Why Trump veered away from the speech’s intended topic of infrastructure is unclear, but Trump also expressed that he thought community colleges needed to be rebranded. “Call it vocational and technical,” Trump said. “People know what that means. They don’t know what a community college means.”

The main problem there is that while many community colleges have some form of vocational training, they aren’t the same thing. Community colleges offer courses in a variety of subjects, so to try to call them technical schools is to misunderstand their function which I suppose is what Trump admitted from the start.

Furthermore, are Americans really as confused as to the purpose of community college as Trump seems to think (or perhaps is himself)? Forty percent of students enrolled in higher education are at community colleges, so they seem to see the benefit.

On the same day, Trump showed his ignorance on another subject: the United States Postal Service. He tweeted that e-retailer Amazon “use[s] our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the U.S.)”

As many people were quick to point out, delivering is USPS’s primary purpose. To suggest that Amazon is abusing a system that exists for the very reason of shipping business and individual’s packages is pretty dumbfounding.

In regards to it causing financial loss to the U.S., that’s just plain not true. While, yes, the USPS is operating in the red these days, package delivery is one of the main ways it makes money to offset other losses.

Of course, the real reason Trump may be showing a sudden concern for the postal service is that he wants to attack Amazon. He’s moaned about their tax rate (while championing last year’s GOP corporate tax reductions) because he has a personal vendetta with the company’s owner Jeff Bezos.

Trump’s opinions may differ, but the overwhelming majority of Americans give high ratings to both the community college system and the USPS. He better not try to fix problems that don’t exist in these institutions based on his own ignorance.

The USPS does pretty well with its letter and package delivery services.

The real reason that there is a financial shortfall is the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006.

"The Postal Service’s $15 billion debt is a direct result of the mandate that it must pay about $5.6 billion a year for 10 years to prefund the retiree healthcare plan. This requirement has deprived the Postal Service of the opportunity to invest in capital projects and research and development."

The day Trump understands something other than money in his bank account, I'll be amazed.

Is he really so clueless, or just so focused on his own agenda??

Joanna M: maybe you could tell us a single positive thing this revolting bastard has done. The entire world is affected by his decisions and we are all more than fed up. With normal people of course there is always something positive they have done or said even if we don't agree. This man is a psychotic narcissist. Why on earth the US citizens have put him in charge? He, and his gang of corrupted criminals. Take him to court and put him in jail and free the world from this abomination.
