Trump Laughs About Attack on Journalist – When Will This Stop?

President Donald Trump has an extensive history of demeaning and threatening journalists, but he took his rhetoric to another low on Thursday when he cheered for a congressman who assaulted a reporter.

“Greg [Gianforte] is smart and, by the way, never wrestle him,” Trump said at a Montana political rally. “Any guy that can do a body slam – he’s my guy.”

Sign the petition: Drop your hateful rhetoric against journalists, Trump!

As you may recall, last May, U.S. Representative Gianforte attacked Ben Jacobs, a reporter, for trying to get his views on health care on the record. Gianforte demonstrated a terrible temper and judgment over – I might add – what seems like a totally normal question to ask of a lawmaker. Montana elected Gianforte anyway because of, well, partisanship.

Here we have the self-professed “law and order” president praising a guy who pled guilty to assault specifically for committing a misdemeanor. He must really believe that journalists deserve a beating to compliment him for that act – and his supporters must agree given how they laughed and cheered after Trump delivered the line.

CNN’s Jim Acosta tweeted, “The disturbing part of Trump’s jokes about Gianforte was the effect on the crowd. I saw one young man in the crowd making body slam gestures. He looked at me and ran his thumb across his throat. I talked to him after the rally was over. He couldn’t stop laughing.”

Meanwhile, the White House Correspondents Association released a statement condemning Trump’s words: “All Americans should recoil from the president’s praise for a violent assault on a reporter doing his Constitutionally protected job. This amounts to the celebration of a crime by someone sworn to uphold our laws and an attack on the First Amendment by someone who has solemnly pledged to defend it. We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media.”

Asked later about his implicit endorsement of violence on journalists, Trump said he did not regret his comments. Apparently, he still views reporters as the “enemy of the people,” the Constitution be damned.

The timing of his comments are especially terrible given the recent events in the Middle East where journalist Jamal Khashoggi was (almost certainly) tortured and murdered at the hands of Saudi Arabian officials. Trump himself has shown very little concern for this human rights abuse and attack on the press, perhaps because he wouldn’t mind doing harm to reporters who are critical of him.

It’s even more strange when you consider that conservative media is actively spinning a tale that Democrats are promoting violent mob rule, while ignoring that the president just got a whole crowd excited about attacking a reporter and in the past has offered to pay legal bills for those who attack people critical of him. Which party is leading a violent mob, exactly?

Take Action

We’ve warned the president before, but clearly he’s not getting the message. Sign this petition encouraging Trump to drop his hateful rhetoric against a free press in order to stop endangering journalists’ lives.

He's a despicable, low-life swine without an ounce of empathy, compassion or even a vague interest in others....unless it's to find a way to get their money. He seems to inspire a purpose in life for our resident trolls....despite the ludicrous assertion of blame for Democrats, etc, they just keep on dreaming.

I think you miss the point by ALWAYS harping on these news sources and todays pipe bomb delivery to Democrat people AND CNN is proof that the hate rhetoric is mounting and innocent people of BOTH parties could have been injured or killed.
The return address on those packages was for Debbie Wasserman- Schultz who YOU trash on a regular basis.
Regardless of you liking or disliking "corporate news outlets, they are just doing their jobs.
YOU have been going on for over 2 years with the same damning posts . STOP or at least THINK before you post more hate rhetoric

Rhoberta E I did mention that Fox news is corporate owned and lies all the time also. My point is that all 3 major cable news networks CNN, MSNBC, and Fox news lied about the Iraq war and the Syrian war. How can you trust a corrupt corporate establishment news source like CNN, MSNBC, and Fox news after they lied about the Iraq war, and MSNBC unfairly told the late Ed Shultz what to say, and admonished him not to cover Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. Our corporate owned media lies all the time and cannot be trusted. This is why I get my news from the Jimmy Dore show on youtube, as well as Secular Talk, RT, Democrascy Now, and other progressive news sites. You need to stop beleiving that MSNBC and CNN are not as dishonest as Fox news.

So YOUR opinion is right and all else is wrong ?
I wonder what YOUR take is on the "pipe" bombs (no official clarification yet) sent to CNN, President Obama, the Clintons, Soros so far . I DON'T suppose you see ANY correlation between all of them ?
My head IS clear and I AM a liberal leaning person here in Canada and I DO have a working brain. Maybe yours is on stall ?

@Paul B, you sound like a Republican or troll.....1. Antifa and DNC/Dems are not connected.....2. what calls for violence do you hear from Dems???? There has been some strong language, but no calls for violence to people especially the media...including the so-called Faux Noise or even more propagandaist so-called media like Alex Jones......3. you are offering a false equivalence.
