You Can’t Have an Attorney General That Lies Under Oath

Rumors of the White House collaborating with Russia won’t be going away anytime soon now that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been caught lying to Congress about meeting with a Russian ambassador.

Sign the Care2 Petition: Sessions Must Step Down After Proven Ties to Russia!

During Sessions’s confirmation hearing, Senator Al Franken asked whether anyone affiliated with the Trump team had contact with Russian government officials. Sessions responded, “I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with Russians.” Responding to a question from Senator Patrick Leahy, he denied contact with Russia a second time.

However, DOJ officials have confirmed that Sessions met with one of Russia’s top spies, Sergey Kislyak, last July and then again in September. Sessions had formally joined Trump’s campaign back in February. Incidentally, Kilsyak is the same Russian ambassador that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was caught communicating with both before and after the election. Flynn was forced to resign after less than a month on the job.

Over 100 Democrats in Congress have quickly called on Sessions to resign, too, though Republicans have been more hesitant to call for their former colleague’s ouster.

That said, a growing number of Republicans agreed that Sessions must recuse himself from the DOJ’s investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S.’s election. Even Representative Jason Chaffetz, who as House Oversight chair has gone out of his way to avoid investigating the White House’s ties to Russia, called on Sessions to step aside from that particular issue.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan says he has yet to see “any purpose or reason” for Sessions to recuse himself. The White House said Sessions is still perfectly capable of conducting the DOJ’s Russian probe, arguing – perplexingly – that Sessions was “100 percent straight” with Congress.

Eventually, on Thursday afternoon, Sessions did recuse himself from the investigation.

The official White House story on Sessions’s meeting with Kilsyak has already changed in the hours since the story broke. Initially, it was said that Sessions lacked a “strong recollection” of what he discussed with Kilsyak. That evolved to an insistence that Sessions did not discuss campaign issues with Kilsyak. Later, that was amended to say their conversation included “superficial comments” about the election, but nothing of “substance.”

The administration has further argued that Sessions chatted with Kilsyak in an official capacity as a part of the Senate Armed Services committee. Still, it is highly unorthodox for a senator to welcome an ambassador/spy into his private office for a one-on-one conversation – that is not how the Armed Services committee typically conducts business.

The old D.C. expression “The cover up is worse than the crime” has already been used to describe dealings within the current administration, and it seems especially relevant now. It’s possible that Sessions’ meetings with Russian officials were far from nefarious, but then why lie about these meetings to Congress in the first place?

The bottom line is that Sessions needs to resign. The White House can try to spin it, but there’s no excuse for the attorney general, a man tasked with ensuring that justice prevails, to perjure himself to Congress. Not only does it send a message that it’s okay to lie in government hearings, but it tarnishes the entire reputation of the Justice Department when a man who appears to lack integrity is at the helm.

For what it’s worth, Sessions seems inclined to agree – or at least he did when the situation involved a Democrat. Back in 1999 after Bill Clinton lied to Congress, Sessions said Clinton had lost the faith of the American people and that he needed to exit the office for the good of country.

If you also agree, don’t forget to sign the Care2 petition. At best, we’re entering some ethically murky territory, and the American people deserve much better than that.

Rhoberta E At least I address the issue, which is that the democrats have become as corrupt as the republicans. You just continue deny this, and blindly follow the corrupt corporate owned democratic party that's in the pockets of Wall Street, banks, corporations, is as corrupt as the republicans, and keeps true honest progressives like Bernie Sanders from having any power, so they can continue to make millions from Wall Street, banks, and corporations.

Marianne C Bernie Sanders isn't part of the democratic party because it's so corrupt and in the pockets of Wall Street, big pharma, and corporations, that he couldn't be a part of it. Corrupt corporate fake democrats like Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Cory Booker have taken $300,000 dollars from big pharma and our criminal healthcare industry and oppose single payer universal healthcare. Bernie Sanders is trying to clean the corrupt democratic party up, end their corruption, and stop the money they get from Wall Street, big pharma and corporations. The corrupt DNC cheated him out of his election, giving over 400 super delegates unfairly to Hillary, having closed primaries, an unfair corporate media that favored Hillary, making it almost impossible for him to win. Bernie Sanders is being shut out of the corrupt democratic party, because they get millions from Wall Street, big pharma, and corporations, and want to keep that corruption going. Unfortunately corporate fake democrats like you who support this corrupt democratic party instead of true progressives like Bernie Sanders, are sellouts, and the reason why this fraud Trump won.

Rhoberta E The corporate fake democrats and their new leader Tom Perez just voted against a bill to limit lobbyist contributions, and are just as corrupt as the republicans. The corrupt corporate fake democrats aren't supporting any progressive positions like a $15.00 an hour minimum wage, free colleges, single payer universal healthcare with a public option, and an end to out of control corporate CEO pay which stands at 270 times worker pay, up from 10 times 20 years ago. True progressives like Bernie Sanders support a $15.00 an hour minimum wage, free colleges, unions, and single payer universal healthcare. As long as you continue to support corporate fake democrats like Tom Perez who are corrupt, part of the establishment, and are doing everything they can to keep true honest progressives like Bernie Sanders from having any power, so they can continue to make millions from Wall Street, big pharma, and corporations. So your the one who is a republican troll here because you support corporate fake democrats, instead of true progressives like Bernie Sanders. Trump is a fraud, but so are corporate fake democrats like you.

Rhoberta E Your repeated post prove how little you know about politics. According to you, anyone who doesn't agree with your limited knowledge of politics is a troll. Do you ever think for yourself, or do you just follow others like blind sheep?

Mike K Russia rigged the election by exposing how the DNC and disgraced liar Debbie Wasserman Shultz rigged the election. Why don't you grow up, and give more than platitudes, and admit that the democrats have become as corrupt as the republicans. Maybe if Tom Perez would support legalizing marijuana, and single payer universal healthcare, and a $15.00 an hour minimum wage, we could support him. Bernie Sanders had a large following because he told us what he wanted to do. Stop blaming Russia, when the corrupt DNC rigged the election to favor Hillary, and keep Bernie Sanders from being elected. Support true progressives like Bernie Sanders and Jill stein, and stop aligning yourself with corporate fake democrats like Hillary, Tom Perez, and Cory Booker, who are just as corrupt as the republicans.
