What $300,000 Can Buy You Across the U.S. (Slideshow)


Depending on where you are in the country, $300,000 can buy you a castle or a closet. In some areas, you’ll find a brand new home with granite countertops and his-and-her walk-in closets in a planned community, or an outdated studio apartment with the most depressing windows in the world. Which is it where you live?

1. Knoxville, Tenn.

Stats: 2,572 sqft 3 bedroom, 3 bath single-family home.

This 7-year-old home is quite the trek from downtown Knoxville, but you sure get a lot of home for your money, and plenty of community amenities to boot, like a swimming pool and clubhouse. This home has all the trappings of modern luxury — granite countertops, a dramatic 2-story foyer, walk-in closets, and more.

2. San Francisco, Ca.

Stats: 264 Sqft studio apartment.

Let’s all take a minute to absorb how tiny this studio apartment is. Okay, ready? What’s even more interesting is that this is, in fact, one of the only livable properties for sale in the city by the bay for under $300,000! From the looks of it, you’ll need a fold out couch to make this work, and the windows look out on either the hallway or the building next door.


3. Detroit, Mich.

Stats: 4,500 sqft 8 bedroom, 8 bath single-family home.

You may be itching for space in San Francisco, but in struggling Detroit, you won’t know what to do with it all. This turn-of-the-century colonial is, in fact, one of the most expensive homes for sale in the entire city. Though there are plenty of incredible details inside and out — built-ins a plenty, fireplaces, claw foot tubs, crown molding — it sure looks like it could use some work. Also on the property is a separate 2 bedroom apartment above the garage.


4. Seattle, Wash.

Stats: 1,128 sqft 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom condo.

This condo is located in Seattle’s bustling Fremont neighborhood, across the street from the huge Woodland Park. The location is great, but what about the property itself? Well, it’s definitely a decent size, the kitchen is updated, there’s a washer and dryer in the unit, and there’s a parking space included. The curb appeal is a little lacking, though.

5. Boston, Mass.

Stats: 1,584 sqft 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom single-family home.

This sturdy 1890 colonial is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in suburban Quincy, Mass. The home has a deck in its large backyard, newer windows and is described as being in “good” condition. There aren’t many photos to go off of, but it has been sitting on the market for 3 months.


6. Las Vegas, NV.

Stats: 2,927 sqft 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom single-family home.

Customize your home from the ground up in sunny Las Vegas. This to-be-built home, features a huge, open living space on the first floor and five bedrooms. The master has 2 walk in closets and a huge en suite bathroom. Though outside of the city center, the strip is just a 10 minute’s drive away.


7. Tulsa, Okla.

Stats: 3,840 sqft 5 bedroom, 3 bath single-family home.

Tulsa has one of the lowest costs of living in the United States, so your $300,000 can go pretty far here. Just 10 years old, this home is a 20 minute’s drive away from downtown Tulsa, within the Bixby school district. The home has a large living space, a formal dining room, and plenty of creatively-painted rooms. It’s also across the street from the planned community’s pool.


8. Raleigh, NC.

Stats: 2,683 sqft 4 bedroom, 3 bath single-family home.

This 6 year old home is located just minutes from downtown Raleigh and features all of the creature comforts of modern homes — granite countertops, walk-in closets, hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances — you name it. The home has a large, if not exactly private and uninspired, yard, and a two-car garage.


9. New York City.

Stats: 750 Sqft. 1 bedroom apartment.

Shocker! There are plenty of decent 1 bedroom apartments in this price range for sale in the Big Apple. Don’t get too excited, though, because, on top of your mortgage, you’ll be paying a $1,295 monthly assessment for such perks like a 24-hour doorman, extra storage and laundry. The unit itself, though, is certainly nice and not too small — the kitchen is updated, the bedroom is a good size, and the hardwood floors seem to be in good shape. But who needs to stay at home when you’re in the heart of the posh Upper East Side?


10. St. Louis, Missouri.

Stats: 2,028 sqft 3 bedroom, 2 bath single-family home.

This 1934 home is updated with plenty modern touches, like (of course!) granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, remodeled bathrooms and pristine hardwood floors. The remodel, though, kept in mind the incredible architectural details of the original home. The second floor rooms seem to be a little oddly shaped, though. Overall, I  think this is where I’m moving. Too cute!
