5 Vegan Cookie & Warm Drink Pairings for the Holidays

The holiday season is officially here and for me, that means one thing: It’s time to make holiday cookies! I love baking cookies at Christmas. I have fond childhood memories of hours spent baking cookies with my mom, always making a few extra ones for us to eat while we worked. Every year, I make sugar cookies in the same shapes and sometimes even burn the edges just like my mom and I did too. It’s tradition.

Holiday cookies are great alone, but they’re even better when they’re paired with the perfect accompanying beverage. When I was a child, this usually meant glasses of dairy-based milk that I never finished. As an adult — and a vegan — I avoid dairy-based milk in favor of plant-based versions made from soybeans, almonds, or coconuts, but the options don’t stop there.

Pairing cookies and hot drinks is a fun way to bring out the complexities of flavors in both the cookie and the beverage. Coffee helps chocolate sing, teas can enhance spices, and warm drinks are perfect for dipping. Plus, and this is true, drinking warm drinks makes you a friendlier person.

To help get you inspired to try some pairings of your own, I’ve paired some of my favorite cookies with the perfect hot drinks that I think you’ll enjoy.

1. Sugar Cut-Out Cookies + Almond Chai Tea

The sugar cut-out cookie is first because they’re my favorite, and this is my go-to recipe. They’re a soft, not-too-sweet sugar cookie that is ideal for decorating which pairs perfectly with a warming cup of chai tea.

This pairing is for those who enjoy a lot of spice. The warm spices of the gingerbread compliment the blend of spices in the mulled cider to create a combination that’s perfect for cozy winter evenings.
