7 Health Conditions that Affect Women More than Men

We are all aware of the obvious physiological differences between men and women. We also know of the gender-specific diseases, such as ovarian cancer, which only affects women and prostate cancer, which only affects men.

However, most people donít realize that the risk and severity of symptoms of diseases that affect both genders vary between men and women. Below are common health conditions that affect women more than men.

1. Migraines

Did you know that migraines are three times more common in women than in men and that women experience migraines differently than men? Women report their migraines to be longer and more intense, with symptoms such as sensitivities to sound and light, visual aura and nausea.

Researchers speculate these differences are due to the high estrogen levels in women.

2. Anxiety

A review of high-quality studies showed that women are twice as likely to suffer anxiety as men.

There are a few possible explanations for this. For one, womenís hormonal fluctuations and brain chemistry may make them more prone to anxiety, research shows.

It could also have to do with how women react to events. Women tend to think deeply about stressful issues, while men focus on dealing with the problem. Other sources explain that women are more likely to suffer physical and mental abuse, which triggers anxiety.

3. Alzheimerís Disease

In the U.S., two-thirds of Alzheimerís patients are women, according to reports.†You may argue thatís because women live longer than men, but thatís just one of the many reasons.

Most studies link the higher risk factor to hormones and genetics. For instance, in this study, women who had the gene ApoE-4 had a higher risk of Alzheimerís compared to men with the same gene.

4. Osteoporosis

Out of the 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, 80 percent of them are women. So does this mean that women lose bone mineral density faster than men? Yes, low estrogen levels after menopause tend to accelerate bone loss in women.

However, thatís not the only explanation. Naturally, women have less dense bones than men, and this puts them at a higher risk of osteoporosis.

5. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Not only do women have a higher risk of UTIs but the risk also increases with age and sexual activity. As you may know, most infections begin in the urethra, an opening thatís prone to infections due to its closeness to the vagina and anus.

After menopause, some women experience bladder shifting, which†makes it harder for them to completely empty their bladders.†This leads to a higher risk of infections. Post-menopausal hormonal changes also reduce the number of good bacteria in the vagina.

6. Thyroid Disease

If you struggle with weight loss, chances are youíve suspected that your thyroid is sabotaging your weight loss progress. You may be right, if youíre a woman. Itís estimated that 15 to 20 percent of women over 50 will suffer from hypothyroidism.

7. Stroke

Research shows that stroke affects women more than men. Also, more women have another stroke within five years after the first one.

Some of the factors that increase the risk of stroke in women include migraines with aura, postmenopausal changes and atrial fibrillation.

Most women who are murdered or assaulted are attacked by their male partner. Doesn't happen the other way around.
