Champagne Alternatives to Drink on New Year’s Eve

The sound of popping Champagne corks is synonymous with New Year’s Eve. Toasting special occasions with a glass of bubbly dates all the way back to the 1700s, and it’s still going strong today. Clearly some things never get old.

Interestingly, Champagne’s rich and storied past had an unusual beginning. Early winemakers weren’t trying to make an effervescent drink. They actually considered the bubbles to be a defect.

Those bothersome bubbles are also the reason why the festive drink leaves you with such a mean hangover. The carbon dioxide sends the alcohol hurtling into your bloodstream faster than other drinks.

Despite its popularity, not everyone is keen on Champagne. You could be allergic to it, you might be pregnant or in recovery, or maybe you simply don’t like the taste. It happens.

Whatever your reason for not wanting to indulge, it’s still nice to raise a glass with friends and family on New Year’s Eve. The problem is, what do you fill it with?

Champagne Alternatives to Drink on New Year's Eve

Non-Alcoholic Champagne Alternatives

If you’re on the wagon, there are plenty of non-alcoholic champagnes to put you in a festive mood. We’re not talking fizzy grape juice, either. With suitably highbrow names and lofty descriptions to match, you definitely won’t feel like you’ve been relegated to the kids’ table when you pop open a bottle of Chateau De Fleur, St Regis or Élivo Zero Zero Deluxe.

There’s also no reason you can’t put your own spin on the last night of year. If you’d prefer a sparkling drink that’s nowhere close to Champagne, why not try ginger ale, kombucha, sparkling lemonade, cider or even sparkling tea? You do you, that’s what I say.

The great thing about celebrating booze-free is that there’s no risk of waking up with a hangover. And just in case you don’t want everyone to know you’re on the wagon, this article on fake drinking will help you avoid any awkward conversations.

Affordable Alternatives to Champagne

It might taste better than some sparkling wines, but is Champagne worth the money? Let’s face it, the stuff’s not cheap. Not everyone can (or wants to) cough up that kind of money, nor do you have to.

There are plenty of affordable bubbly alternatives to toast auld lang syne. The four most popular are Prosecco, Crémant, Cava and Sekt. While not as well known, Abrau-Durso, Franchetto and Gragnano are also worth a mention.

Each of these sparkling wines brings its own unique flavor and personality to the party. Best of all, none of them require a second mortgage on the house.

Make Your Own Sparkling Wine

If you’re feeling inspired, why not try your hand at making your own bubbly? Turning inexpensive white wine into sparkling wine is apparently not that difficult. All that you need are a cream whipper or soda charger and two carbon dioxide cartridges. Easy peasy. The guys at Munchies.com have a second option, too. It’s more work and takes longer, but they claim it alters the flavor of the wine, yielding an end product that tastes a little bit like the real thing.

There you have it, a whole lot of Champagne alternatives to drink on New Year’s Eve. However you decide to see in 2019, make sure you have fun and stay safe.

Interesting. Not a big champagne fan, so escorting in the new year without it was not a problem. This year there was a party at our place of worship, and the AA group that meets there on Monday night was also having a party, so we combined our foods and games and had a blast. Needless to say, there was no alcohol.
