Fast and Easy Healthy Mate Latte Recipe

If you’re looking for a coffee alternative and healthy energizing morning beverage, this might be it. Not only is this recipe fast and easy, it’s also energizing and loaded with dense nutrition. Add to that a negative carbon footprint, and we’re talking about the best morning drink ever!

Yerba Mate is said to have the greatest benefits of coffee, green tea and chocolate all rolled into one. Mate is an antioxidant powerhouse and, bonus, drinking it may even be beneficial to the environment. According to the packaging on Guayakis loose leaf mate, drinking a pound of it actually has a negative carbon footprint, to the tune of -573g of CO2 emissions.

The health benefits of mate are well documented and likely the reason that it’s the national beverage of several South American countries. The caffeine content of mate is between coffee and green tea, and it delivers energy and deep nutrition without the acid or jitters associated with coffee. Mate is also said to aid in elimination as well as support weight loss.

Skipping the dairy in your morning drink is also a great way to make yourself and the planet healthier. This recipe is made with hemp seeds to give it a rich creamy texture. Hemp is pretty much my favorite food on the planet because it is one of the most sustainable and delicious superfoods available. Hemp is an easily digestible complete protein that also packs the benefits of chlorophyll, the ideal ratio of healthy fats and essential minerals like magnesium and iron.

The result is a hot, thick, rich sweet drink that will energize you, provide more mental clarity and fill your body with dense, antioxidant nutrition! Play around with the brewed mate volume until you find the consistency that you like. Consider tossing a small knuckle of fresh turmeric and a dash of black pepper into the blender to help reduce inflammation as well. This drink can also be chilled and enjoyed on a hot day.

Fast and Easy Healthy Mate Latte Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons hemp seeds
  • 12 oz. brewed yerba mate
  • 1 serving sweetener of choice (I choose liquid stevia)

Directions

  1. Boil purified or spring water in a pot or electric kettle.
  2. Pour water on loose leaf mate  (1.5 tsp per serving so feel free to make a bigger batch with a french press or coffee maker)
  3. Steep 3-10 minutes
  4. Add hemp seeds, brewed mate and sweetener to a high speed blender and blend for 45 seconds. (If you’re adding turmeric and black pepper add these in now, too).

Give it a try and let me know in the comments how you like it! Remember, every food choice you make can be either medicine or poison for both your body as well as the planet. Choose wisely.

I tried Yerba Mate for a while, and just never developed a taste for it. I'll try it again. In the meantime, I've never tried hemp! Humm, maybe it is time.

I didn't know that Yerbe Matte is healthier than coffee or green tea, so now I'll definitely give it a try. I wonder how it compares with Matcha......
