Greenpeace Membership

I spent the day in Santa Cruz over the weekend – if you recall, I went on a little shopping hunt and wound up with a very cool recycled bracelet that I haven’t taken off since I first put it on.

While strolling Pacific Avenue downtown, and looking for said gift to myself, I was stopped by a very earnest and bright young woman canvassing for Greenpeace. We had a great conversation about which causes were most dear to us both and what Greenpeace was doing about several of them. Her goal was to get folks to sign up for a membership at fifty cents per day, or $15 dollars per month. An amount that seems to me a small price to pay to help the same company who convinced wholesale/retail giant Costco to redlist endangered fish and be a corporate industry leader for sustainable fishing practices. Not a small feat, that, and organizations who do that kind of work for us need our support, especially when it’s only to the tune of about one cafe-bought coffee and scone per week.

I never knew Greenpeace actually convinced Costco of their cause! It is true that coffee and a scone are enough to make a change in the world...

Signing petitions, and calling congressmen are also great ways to help out. Care2 has a group called Armchair Activism. It's got various ways to help without having to commit too much time or money to any one thing. Check it out.

I agree with Shannon B> we all can make various types of contributions and each in our own way. I do give to various organizations and believe me, I would love to give to many more. However, volunteering, petitioning,e-mailing, writing letters- phone calls, even calls to our Senators & Congress Reps, newspaper article write in's are all needed as well. What we all are doing "HERE," seeing our results, all work and count. Many thanks to everyone, for caring and being here to "Make A Difference!" Appreciate this post!~

“Only when the last tree has been cut down.

Only when the last river has been poisoned.

Only when the last fish has been caught.

Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.”
–Proverb, American Indian.

I've been a member of Greenpeace for 20 years, as well as making a substantial year end donation. Support for groups like Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, Friends of the Earth, just to name a few, are imperative if we are to stop the egregious corporate greed which is destroying the Earth. You can't eat a dollar bill.

We have made a small monthly donation for donkey's years. A great and important organisation for sure. Frankly support such organisations never goes amiss, we think Elizabeth R. is just looking for an excuse.
