Healthy Homemade Holidays: Rose Body Butter

Why not give a more personal and luxurious gift to friends, family, or secret Santas on your holiday list?  Here’s a rich body butter that’s perfect for the drying effects of winter weather.  Unlike store-bought versions, it is totally free of synthetic chemicals, colors, and artificial fragrances, making it perfect for sensitive skin or anyone who’s trying to avoid these less-than-desirables.  Plus, it’s easy to make.

Equipment needed:

  • A blender (preferably an older blender since the body butter can leave a residue)
  • A small- to medium-size glass bowl
  • A small saucepan
  • A spatula
  • Nice-looking jars to hold the body butter

*Make sure all tools are sterilized before beginning.


  • 1 cup of sweet almond oil (you can use a different type of oil, but this one doesn’t leave a greasy film)
  • 2 Tablespoons of shaved beeswax (available in most health food stores—use an unscented beeswax tealight free of colors if you can’t find plain beeswax)
  • 1 cup distilled water or rose water (the latter is available in most health food stores)
  • 22 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 8 drops rose essential oil (if you can’t find a pure rose oil or it is too expensive, substitute orange essential oil or just use more ylang ylang oil).


In a small saucepan, shave 2 Tablespoons of beeswax.  Add the sweet almond oil and heat over low heat until the beeswax is melted and remove from heat.  Pour into a blender and slowly add the water or rose water until it emulsifies.  Add the essential oils (ylang ylang, rose and/or orange) and blend until well mixed.  Pour into the glass jars and store in the fridge for about 6 months.
