Hugging Pups on Death Row Saved At The 11th Hour

Two hours and six minutes. This was the time it took for a photograph of two dogs forlornly hugging each other on death row at an Atlanta shelter to circulate on social media and trigger action that would save their lives.  The photograph was taken by a rescue group called Angels Among Us Pet Rescue and was accompanied by this heart-rendering text:

I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we were but told us that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless…

(Now from the humans) Oh my gosh!!! We see a lot of things in rescue but this absolutely will reduce you to tears! Kala and Keira are in a shelter and are scheduled to be put to sleep. Today is their last day unless we can save them. This is as urgent as urgent can get. We really don’t have time to spare. We have no fosters available. Animals in need have overwhelmed us recently and we must have someone today apply to foster. These friends can be separated. They will do fine as long as they’re alive. You can donate, share and pray. But that alone won’t save them. Someone from Angels will be with you every step of your foster journey. You won’t be alone and you’ll have more joy and reward than you could ever imagine. If you’ve ever wanted to foster but just couldn’t quite decide, now is the time to say YES!!

And we MUST HAVE DONATIONS to get them vetted. AAUPR needs donations to provide them both with a head-to-toe exam, vaccinations, a fecal & heartworm test, microchip, and spay. We can’t do this without you!!!!

The photo, taken by Malena Evans, went viral and received thousands of likes within hours. Not surprisingly, offers to foster and donate also came pouring in and, as noted above, within two hours and six minutes of sending off the original photo and plea, Kala and Kiera were picked-up by an Angels volunteer and were safely on their way to a vet.

An Angels Among Us Pet Rescue volunteer then sent out this update to supporters:

That’s how you take action!! We don’t even have a picture yet as our volunteer is driving. Stay tuned for the freedom ride!! You are AMAZING people and we are grateful beyond words for your support.

Yes, indeed, that is how it is done. It is all about people caring and taking that extra step to help those who cannot help themselves. Animals in shelters, especially those on death row, completely rely on our compassion and immediate action. You too can be a hero that saves a life this week or next by fostering, donating and volunteering with local animal rescue groups. Kala and Kiera were saved, but thousands more like them sit sorrowfully on death row, their fate depending on someone like you to take decisive action.

According to a Facebook update, Kala and Kiera were able to stay together and are now in foster care awaiting their forever home. With this happy ending, it is important to encourage others to spay and neuter as well as understand that pets are a lifetime commitment. It is also important to remember that we can do amazing things when we all work together!

What an inspiring story! Thank God for the caring people on facebook who took action immediately to raise funds and also to the person that offered to foster these two beautiful dogs! Every day, I see hundreds of dogs on facebook on deathrow, wating to be rescued. Please help rescue organizations in your community and your local shelter by donating your money or by fostering. Many more lives could be saved this way. And remember pet owners: when you adopt or acquire a pet, you have a lifetime commitment to that pet! There's far too many people dumping their responsibility off on to shelters. It just isn't right! Spay and neuter and cherish the life of your pet as you would any other member of your family!

This kind of stuff is so emotionally dishonest, I just cannot condone it.
