Is the Law of Attraction Real?

The Law of Attraction is the idea that the vibes you put out (usually positive or negative) become the qualities that life reflects back to you. To oversimplify it: if you’re negative, negative things tend to come your way. Conversely, if you’re focused on doing and being a force for good, more positive things come your way.

Yes, it sounds pretty woo-woo. But that doesn’t mean it’s not reality. In fact, on some level, the Law of Attraction is scientifically plausible—even likely.

Understanding the Law of Attraction

Let’s start with our big ol’ brains. Our brains contain mirror neurons that are hardwired for reflecting the movements of a person with whom we’re engaging. This is a common social skill that makes us more likable. When someone we like crosses their legs, we’ll subconsciously mirror that movement and cross our legs.

But it doesn’t stop there.

These mirror neurons also play a role in the empathy and journey we experience when watching TV shows or reading good books. They’re what allow us to get drawn in and engaged in such a way that we feel impacted and energetically changed.

Think about that—external, non-personal influencers can powerfully change how we feel on the inside!

The power of external influences on our emotional outlook is surprisingly strong. Some studies have shown that people who look at faces of people experiencing fear will actually start to experience changes in their brain chemistry—changes that would occur if they were going through fear themselves. This even happens when the viewer doesn’t consciously realize that the other person is fearful.

This goes to show that we connect and relate to other people on a deep level. It may be why pure laughter, anxiety, irritation and joy can seem contagious!

How to Use the Law of Attraction

What does all this have to do with spiritual energy? It demonstrates that what YOU think and feel will affect how others around you will act.

If you truly experience love and joy, you’ll see these things begin to surround you in your life, reflected in the people nearest and dearest.

An easy way to promote this type of positive thinking and mindfulness is through meditation. By balancing your internal chatter, you encourage greater inner joy and peace and powerfully attract positive energy into your life.

The Law of Attraction isn’t just neural circuitry at work. There’s also interesting physics research which suggests that the simple act of watching particles actually changes how they behave.

“One of the most famous experiments in physics is the double slit experiment,” Plus Magazine explains. “It demonstrates, with unparalleled strangeness, that little particles of matter have something of a wave about them, and suggests that the very act of observing a particle has a dramatic effect on its behaviour.”

The observed particles tended to move in the manner in which scientists anticipated they would, whereas the unobserved moved in surprisingly unexpected ways. Physicists don’t understand why this happens quite yet, but it does support the idea that our observation, consciousness and attention are powerful tools.

In fact, the whole secret behind the Law of Attraction may lie in making your deepest desires more conscious.

That means journaling about them, talking about them, fantasizing about them, creating mantras, anything. Once you’re clear on what you want and put in some effort, your brain and energy are set up to help get you there.

If you practice meditation and setting your intentions regularly, you’ll begin to see real changes in what you attract to yourself. It’s a simple shift, but it’s also science.

I believe that what you give out returns to you... sometimes in spades.
