Maybe Meditation Should Have More Swears

I think one of the things that makes meditation feel unapproachable is that it seems so serious. This meditation video kicks that idea to the curb, and it’s a real delight!

H*nest Meditation is a fresh take on an old idea. The first video, F*ck That, is two-and-a-half minutes of soothing real-talk, complete with swears. The ideas in the video are ones you probably recognize from other guided meditations, but the language is a lot more cheeky. I was sure that this meditation video was more joke than anything, but after practicing it a few times, I’m hooked.

If you think that swears and meditation can’t go together, I encourage you to take a couple of minutes to give this funny, relaxing video a try.

F*ck That was produced by storyteller Jason Headley, and it’s gone viral since its release. At the time of this writing, it had over 7 million views on YouTube. He’s also released an app and a book. The $2 app contains a few expanded versions of the two-minute video above.

F*ck That, the 64-page book, is “the completely truthful and oddly tranquil guide to achieving your inner peace.” I just ordered it for Kindle and can’t wait to read it.

Headley recently did a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA). An AMA is a Reddit thread where regular users can ask a celebrity any questions they like, and he or she will answer. In his AMA, he says that he’s not even that into meditation. He got the idea after listening to the guided meditation videos that his wife was doing. He says, “One day she was upset about something and I said, ‘Just acknowledge that all that shit is fucking bullshit.’ And we both laughed at that, the salty language in the soothing voice. So I ran with it.” He also says he has ideas for other add-ons to expand the H*nest Meditation app.

It makes sense that people would find this video calming. There’s some solid evidence that laughter is good for our mental health. A 2014 study found that laughter lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels and improves short-term memory. Laughter also stimulates deep breathing and aids in muscle relaxation, according to The Mayo Clinic.

I’d love to hear from other meditators out there. I sort of fall in and out of meditation, and the comedy element really worked for me. What do you think about the H*nest Mediation video?
