Newborn Baby Pregnant With Twins

Just when you thought you heard it all, this story comes along a story of doctors removing two fetuses from a 3-week-old girl, who was born pregnant with twins.

At first, doctors thought the newborn baby girl had a pair of tumors in her abdomen, but upon closer examination it was revealed that the growths were actually twin fetuses weighing 14.2 grams and 9.3 grams after 8 to 10 weeks of gestation.

Dr. Yu Kai-man, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital told reporters that “it was almost impossible to detect during the prenatal checkup, as the embryo inside the baby was too small… Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place.”

Yu and colleagues described the unusual condition known fetus-in-fetu in the February 2015 issue of the Hong Kong Medical Journal. The fetuses were described as each having an umbilical cord connected to a single placenta-like mass in the girl’s abdomen.

Fetus-in-fetu, as bizarre as it is, actually occurs in about one of every 500,000 births. However, fewer than 200 cases have been reported in medical literature.

The cause of this condition, is unknown, but with increased applications of ultrasound technology and prenatal care, researchers hope more will be become known about this rare condition.

Terrible thing for the baby's parents to have to go through. I hope the baby was okay.

Only actually achieveable in soybean aphids where the female effectively has 7 generations inside her as she gives birth.

The title is deceptive. The baby was not "pregnant". Multiple births can absorb the sibling/s. It is also probable that such pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion of the affected "normal" fetus before the condition is detected. As others have mentioned, people can carry undeveloped siblings into adulthood & for some reason they will suddenly begin to grow like a tumour & that is when they are detected. Incidents like this must make the pro birthers crazy. Heck, gotta' save that parasitic clump of cells at all costs.
