Overwhelmed By Change? How Your Heart Can Help You Adjust

It is no secret that our world is changing very fast. As you face this period of accelerated change, do you feel you have the tools you need to deal with and adjust to what is happening?

History shows us that “the heart” might be just what is needed to navigate the ever-shifting terrain we experience daily. There is a unique intelligence in your own heart that is designed to help you adjust to the speedup of change. When you access that intelligence, you will have more clarity and power to clear away unwanted thoughts and feelings quickly and adjust to rapid change with confidence.

It’s no coincidence that ancient cultures from Greece to China looked at the heart as a primary source of feeling, virtue, and intelligence. They felt that only through the heart could greed be replaced by charity, selfishness by compassion and fear by love. Many faiths all over the world talk about the heart as the seat of the soul and the doorway to spirit or higher self. The ancient Chinese considered the heart as the primary organ capable of influencing and directing people’s emotions, morality, decision-making ability and attainment of inner balance. The ancient Chinese characters for “anguish,” “thinking,” “thought,” “intent,” “listen,” “virtue,” as well as “compassion” and “love” each include a glyph for “heart.”

Western languages also refer to the heart both as a physical organ and as a metaphor for feeling, intuition, and the center of people’s personalities or beings. After all, it’s in the area of the heart that people experience the feeling of many emotions like joy, love, hurt and sadness. All languages are filled with meaningful phrases like “having heart,” “being heartfelt,” “playing with a lot of heart,” “going deep in your heart to find an answer,” and so forth.

It was only in the 1990s that scientists discovered that, in fact, there is a link between the physical and the feeling heart—and therein resides the missing link to emotional transformation. Research done at the HeartMath Institute and other institutions is providing new hope for people with depression, anxiety, and other stress-related disorders. We are bringing to light powerful, yet simple techniques that people can use to improve how one feels, thinks, and perceives life—techniques that increase heart intelligence and mental clarity, that help regulate brain chemicals and hormones, that bring more natural highs.
