Should You Take a Probiotic?

We usually think of bacteria as germs that force us to take a sick day. But your body is also full of ”good” bacteria that is extremely beneficial, particularly to your gut.

Not having enough of this “good” bacteria can wreak all sorts of havoc on the body’s systems, leading to issues like weight gain, acne, constipation and even major chronic health issues. Fortunately, balance can be restored by eating fermented foods or taking a probiotic supplement.

What is a probiotic?

Many types of bacteria are classified as probiotics, the most common of which are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, Saccharomyces boulardii and Bacillus coagulans. Each type (and each strain of each type) works in unique ways to support overall wellness by promoting a healthy immune system, weight management and gut health.

How might a probiotic help me?

Probiotics have been found to improve conditions like inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, easing symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation and reducing inflammation.

Additionally, some studies suggest that probiotics can help with preventing and treating yeast infections, eczema, allergies and asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract infections and even lactose intolerance.

Can probiotics be bad for me?

As with any health intervention, taking a probiotic can be risky for certain populations. While considered safe for most people, you’ll want to be more cautious of you have an immune system problem or other serious health condition.

Always talk to your doctor before taking a probiotic supplement, particularly if you are pregnant or nursing. That’s always the best way to go!
