The Flight and Plight of Monarch Butterflies (video)

This National Geographic video tells the story of the beautiful Monarch butterflies, and the threats to their annual migration patterns and lives. Many of these threatening activities, such as logging, involve Monarch butterfly habitat destruction. The logging around the butterfly sanctuary shown here eliminates the protection offered by the surrounding forest.

We planted milkweed this year and were rewarded with Monarch caterpillars. Such amazing and beautiful creatures.

If you'd like to help, please check out the Monarch Watch web site:
I know these folks personally and they work tirelessly to educate and inform people of all ages about the Monarch and how to increase their habitat. One simple solution: plat milkweed!

Interesting and sad. I have several buddleia "butterfly bushes" in my yard and when they are in bloom, it's fun to watch and sometimes touch the butterflys that come seeking nectar. Just amazing! :)

How can we help protect the monarch butterfly habitat and sanctuary? I would love to help.

Fascinating and beautiful, but also so sad; are we killing everything?

The butterflies are only one of the species of creature lost when habitat is destroyed.

We really ought to help our planet by not destroying natural habitats. I wish people weren't so greedy.

There's a beautiful documentary on the Monarchs that I think is a Nova program; I saw it recently and I think it's probably on the Netflix "instantly watchable" list. (ie, you don't have to send for it, just press a button to watch on computer.) It's fascinating and well worth your time.
