Which Will Improve Your Life More: a Cat or a Dog?

Pet lovers aren’t surprised by research stating the emotional, physical and mental benefits of owning cats and dogs. WebMD.com wrote that there is now proof that pets enhance our social skills and decrease a person’s risk of heart attack.

Animal Planet tells us “Pets can be the common denominator that helps people connect — even among people who don’t seem to be very much alike.” Dog owners are likely to meet and speak to other dog owners at training classes, dog parks, and dog-friendly outdoor cafes.

Animal Planet also reports:

“Having a pet is not only good for filling your heart with love, but also the health of your heart. Studies at The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have concluded that pet owners exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Pets help reduce or at least control their owners’ overall stress levels.”

In the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Researcher James E. Gern, MD, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told WebMD.com that children growing up with pets were less likely to develop asthma and allergies as adults. If that furry friend is a dog, then they are also less likely to be allergic to pets or develop eczema. In addition, they were more likely to develop stronger immune systems.

After all this research, which is best for you, a cat or a dog? Enjoy this fun video from Shareability describing the differences between cats and dogs, and asking the age-old question of which is better. The cats and dogs are from the Utah Humane Society, and the snow dogs are from the Arctic Rescue.
