Berlin zoo has come under fire for allowing its top attraction, polar bear Knut, to kill fish. Knut, now 16 months old, killed 10 live carp swimming in the moat surrounding his enclosure. The fish were placed there to keep the water clean by eating algae

That is sad, it's not allowed. I would think it would be consider part of an enrichment progam, allowing the bear to have normal behavior while living in captivity.

The point is that "live" fish are not allowed to be fed to other animals. There is no reason to torture any creature, for whatever reason. On one hand we get upset when the Chinese feed live animals to big cats in zoos and circuses, and on the other hand it would be ok to feed live fish? I think not.

The way I see this is they shouldn't have put the fish in there for this bear still has his wild instinks in him to do what he's suppose to do. Let them figure another way to keep the water clean. After all they feed the bear fish every day Dua!!! what do you expect him to do when he see's them? Say hello how are you? Thanks Cher C. noted.

I agree Bergstrom. It's the most natural thing for a Polar Bear to do. Knut's problem is there's not an adult Polar Bear to show him what to do once he's caught it. To him he thinks it's a game so why can't the keepers put something in the exhibit that he can play with?
