Zimbabwe has allegedly captured dozens of baby elephants from the wild in order to export them to zoos and circuses in China, according to activist group the Zimbabwe Conservation Taskforce (ZCTF).

Speaking to the Telegraph newspaper, Zimbabwean officials admitted that they had captured baby elephants, but that these were bound for the the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and not China as reported by the ZCTF, adding confusion to the situation.
The officials defended their actions by saying that the export of live elephants is not illegal. Whilst this is changing in many countries - South Africa made it illegal in 2008 when research revealed the trauma and devastating psychological suffering the elephants experience - China and Zimbabwe are still actively involved in the wild animal trade.

We are slowly eliminating animals from circuses in most countries yet China continues living in a time-warp bubble!

Noted - Zimbabwe obviously couldn't care less about it's elephants - can you imagine appealing to someone like Robert Mugabe? You wouldn't get anywhere, guaranteed, unfortunately. My local doctor is from Zimbabwe, we have interesting talks about his country.

Yeah, that's what China needs-more animals to torture. Just transporting them will be stressful enough for them. What is wrong with people? More elephants, no people.

Given Asia's sour treatment of animals, this is a horrible idea. The Rino's are becoming extinct because the Asian market believes the horns are a cure for a ridiculous idea. And they only care about the elephant's tusks for Ivory so you can picture the results of this trade for what kind of "zoos". we can only imagine and feel depressed.about

This is a disgraceful and ignorant act for greed. Mugabe has destroyed this nation and is one of the most corrupt in Africa. He has totally destroyed what was at one time a beautiful nation. China should be ashamed for this act as well. What kind of a nation would BUY wildlife for cultural and other selfish reasons? Pathetic!!!!!

They have no compassion with the poor little babies and their poor mothers. How is it possible? I don´t understand the people that think only about their greed of money and lost their mind. I hope their karma will meet them soon.

Sadly noted. Ty for the information, corrupt governments in Africa are no secret and unfortunately this is driving iconic endangered species quickly towards extinction. This cruel treatment of baby elephants for profit must be stopped in Zimbabwe, this intelligent feeling creature cannot be treated like this in this day and age. Barbaric.

Tragic loss of species to abusive zoos. Many of these young ones won't survive being taken from their mothers. What a grief. what a waste of beautiful lives.
