NAGANO (Jiji Press) -- A total of 31 climbers are believed to have died near the peak of Mt. Ontake, which erupted Saturday, the Nagano prefectural police department said Sunday.

How frightening for all of the people. This must of happened really unexpected to have so many climbers there. I hope they find the missing people alive and just not yet accounted for. Seems Japan has been having it's share of terrible natural disasters these past few years.

It sounds as though 31 may be a low estimate. The interviews with survivors showed the nightmare they have lived through.
