BOISE, Idaho — An environmental group wants a federal judge to halt a planned wolf and coyote derby in Idaho, branding the event an illegal killing contest.

Filed Monday by Wild Earth Guardians and other groups, the complaint in U.S. District Court contends the U.S. Forest Service ignored federal laws when it allowed the derby to proceed on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29 without first securing a special-use permit.

A group behind the event aims to lure up to 300 hunters to Salmon, Idaho, to boost the economy — and raise awareness for health concerns it says are related to wolves.

The environmentalists say the Forest Service failed to follow its own procedures and violated the National Environmental Policy Act by “failing entirely to consider the environmental impacts of allowing the killing contest.”

Thanks for the update. I'm hoping this judge will stop this slaughter. What a lesson to teach your children. I've signed every petition, donated money and still this ignorance continues. I'm quite beyond it with the Secretary of the Interior doing NOTHING, both for the wolves and the wild Mustangs. Frankly, I don't know how she can look herself in the mirror.

I hope the judge stops the wolf hunt. Our government and it's agencies are not friendly to animals.

Oh God, I hope it works!!! I just hope it works. These people are so incredibly stupid they have no idea what harm they are doing to the environment by killing wolves. Wolves do not overbreed, but humans feel they must overpopulate since they consider themselves so valuable in the sight of God. People are stupid, really stupid who would even consider such a thing as a derby on wolves. For God's sake it must be stopped. If it isn't we will suffer the consequences of the animals wolves keep in check overrunning all areas. It would be horrible!

Thank you, I hope this is stopped. The killing of the wolves needs to end. What has happened to people that kill just to kill. We SHARE this earth with the animals and it isn't all about the humans.

There are so many people who want the wolves around and so few who don't, so why are the minority winning? I don't understand. What needs to be done is to recall those in offices that are approving this hunt. They will very soon get the message if they will soon not have a job.

Today it was to start, I hope they stopped it. Brutal and senseless killing of these beautiful animals and I can't wrap my head around the people who kill for the thrill and the parents who are planning on taking their children to do the same. The companies that are helping to fund this should be boycotted also.
