In Malay Orang means "Person" and Utan is derived from hutan, which means "forest". Thus, orangutan literally means "Person of the forest"

What makes an orangutan special?
So many things are amazing about our forest friends.
Orangutans are born with an ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of humankind’s closest relatives, sharing nearly 97% of the same DNA. Indigenous peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape “orang hutan” literally translating into English as “person of the forest.”
In times past orangutans were not killed because the indignenous peoples felt the orangutan was simply a person hiding in the trees, trying to avoid having to go to work or become a slave.
Orangutans are unique in the ape world. Of the four kinds of great apes – gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans – only the orangutan comes from Asia; the others all come from Africa. There are two separate species of orangutan – the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)...

Orangutans can live up to 50 years in the wild. Females first reproduce between 10-15 years of age. They give birth at most once every 5 years, and the interval between babies can be as long as 10 years... (WWF)

Now I see that it's also "World Humanitarian Day". I think it's more important to save the Orangutans though!

Sorry, of course World Humanitarian Day is important. And, if a million members would Care2, we could make a difference. I believe that, I really do!

Trying to do my best. I have signed 200 hundred petitions I guess. I would never buy anything containing palm oil. Cadbury, thanks! By clicking to donate I have fed rescued primates 4,212 times so far. I wish that I could do a lot more of course...

Thank you Ben. I'm trying my best to save orangutans too!! Busch Gardens in Fla has a special recovery program for orangutans. They are magnificent animals with human expressions.....

Thanks Ben. I think saving the orangutans is more important, too. For me, a simple choice.

Beautiful special furry humans. A real shame most products contain palm oil on store shelves which is spelling their demise. thx Ben

Thanks Folks! Orangutan Day was yesterday, but it should be every day from now on until we have saved every one of them! In their natural habitat of course. Palm oil is a bloody curse!

Thank you Ben for posting this and yes, just imagine if we had even 5 million active members on C2 let alone 10.

Rescuing orphaned and displaced orangutans is only part of our critical work. The orangutan's rainforest is disappearing at an unprecedented rate, and if we don’t work to stop the destruction and preserve what precious little habitat is left, the orangutan species will not survive.

There was also a link to the article that I left that brought one to a site to help the orangutans. Maybe one site or the other will move some people to help.

Here is a list of products that contain palm oil. Palm oil is causing massive deforestation that is ruining the habitat of not only the orangutan but other species as well.
