In the 1960s, it was estimated that there were 200,000 lions on the African continent. Sadly, only 20,000 are left today. Sport hunting is still permitted in the wild and South Africa specifically breeds lions for captive hunting,- "canned hunting".

No petition present! And this issue makes no sense. There are already strict laws regarding such "trophies" through Customs of most countries. So what exactly, if anything, is the author of this overview asking for? I guess it doesn't matter since there's no petition. And the target? Fish and Wildlife "corporate office?" The author should have done his/her homework before attempting this! It was a waste of time to make/post it without knowing the target or knowing how to make a petition.

Signed, Lindsey! Thank you for posting. The petitioner did do their homework, Dan. The target is Fish and Wildlife Cooperate office, Department of the Interior. The following information below, posted March 2011(Guess who needs to do their homework)

Following post dated March, 2011

On Tuesday morning, a coalition of wildlife groups filed a petition with the Department of Interior seeking such a listing under the Endangered Species Act, which would prevent the importation of heads or skins or claws (or any parts) of lions that were hunted as trophies.

Although big game hunting might seem like a relic of another era, the petition documents the role that international trade in African lions and their parts is playing a role in the reduction of the population. “From 1998 through 2008, at least 7,445 wild lions were traded internationally, with the United States importing a minimum of 4,021,” the groups said.

“Additionally, 64 percent of the 5,663 wild lions traded internationally for recreational trophy hunting purposes were imported to the United States.”

The United States is the leading importer of lions and lion parts for commercial and recreational trade, from skulls to claws to hides to actual live lions, according to Teresa Telecky, director of the wildlife department for the Humane Society of the United States, one of the groups behind the petition. “Americans’ thirst for exotic goods and trophies to hang on their walls is driving lions to extinction,” she said in a statement.

Yeah, Dan W., those "strict" laws? No "trophy" should be rotting. Of the 20,000 lions left - a precipitous drop of 95% in fifty years - only 5,000 are males. There was indeed a petition present, but your bloviation appears to be totally about self.

What a shame that these magnificent animals are bred only to be shot by some bored, rich egomaniac who needs to kill an animal of prey and mount its head on the wall of his den in order to feel like a man. When an animal is cornered and defenseless, is it really such a feat to pull the trigger? If these captive hunters really want to prove their skill and bravado, perhaps they should shoot at one another. Wealthy big game hunters (is "hunting" actually a part of the sport?) who don't know what to do with their money should take up another a more worthwhile hobby, such as philanthropy.

If canned hunting was on its way out, we wouldn't keep needing to sign petitions. TY, Nyack, you have done your homework and I gladly sign.

Canned hunting it not hunting, just simple slaughter of beautiful animals by deranged people who enjoy killing, and have the cash to buy their victims.

Hunting is not a sport. In a sport, both sides should know they're in the game.” Paul Rodriguez

The royal Lion is dead.

The two legged oaf grins and swipes his hands as if he had done something noble.

No matter. In a few years he will meet the Lion -- the Lion he killed to brag and boast and pass wind.
That Lion will meet him at the door of the judgement hall of the Lords of Karma where Lion is the petted mascot.

Hey, Rainbow Warriors, I suggest that you who criticize so readily incorporate an important recognition into the valiant work we do together.

First I recognize and thank the 99% who support our leaders. Most of you are quick to praise and slow to hurt the feelings of those who do a noble work with Care2. I applaud you.

But for those of you, and there are many, who look to find fault ------ look to the enemies out there! Try compassion and appreciation for those of us who are human enough to make mistakes and divine enough to do the best they can. Recognize who your friends are.

Don't confuse the friend with the enemy. There's too much criticism of those who are working hard for the continuous creation of Care2. I've checked other sites. They don't compare with Care2. I'm grateful for the many people who contribute to Care2. The only people who don't make mistakes are the ones in the graveyard. I'm not so sure about them! lol

I suggest that those who criticize remember to use their grace and their support for those who lead the Rainbow Warriors. It is easy to criticize. It is difficult to support. Try it. It may seem to almost choke you but it is possible to get a thank you out of your mouth.

Do it a few times and you might find yourself smiling.
