Humans aren't the only ones who suffer from morbid obesity. But one British charity is taking a weight-and-see approach to pet obesity by holding a contest for some of the country's most overweight animals.

Giving your pet treats, is the first no no. They don't need them; in fact, I don't know why they exist.
Most dry food has more fat tan canned. Check your labels on their fat content. Even weight control dry food kept out all day, is probably excessive to 3 oz of canned. This is for a single cat household.
I too have a tubby 8 year old kitty. It is very hard to control his intake when there are 2 more cats in the house.

My animal companions receive carrots as treats and just love them since they are so crunchy.

I remember seeing quite a few overweight animals when I was in London a few years back, including my ex mother in law's cat. Overfeeding animals is quite a problem here, as well. People think they're spoiling their animals, feeding them table scraps and all that....but in reality, they're killing them.

I always thought my beloved Luna was a little overweight, but compared to these animals she looked like a super model cat! These animals are far too overweight and it is bad for their health. But I am glad they are finally trying to do something about it with these particular animals.

Thank you for posting - nice to see a post on this ! It makes me sick. I have seen a couple of dogs so overweight they can barely walk. Some people just over feed their animals just to sedate them - to shut them up so to speak. Some do it because they can't say no, or they want the dog to like them - I don't freaking no, but it's so wrong ! I am so glad this is being more addressed. If I can pinch an than inch on my dog - that' s it - no more yummies for you! No, really - like Nicole, my dog loves veggies - It's not that hard to keep our pets fit - it's just common sense.

this is so abusive even though some people overfeed their pet because they 'love' them. if you love them, then don't put their health at risk.

I always had that treats problem with my cats until I realized that one of my females, Ezzie-Wezzie, was interested in the aluminum foil. So I rolled it into a ball and she batted it around the floor. She was my 'Princess' and I miss her very much along with my other cats who, btw, were all slender like me!

When will people realize that more food does not mean that you love your pet more than anyone else? You're doing more harm than good. This really should be considered a form of abuse. The video of that poor cat that was barely able to walk up the stairs is so sad.

Weight loss for felines must be dealt with extremely cautiously. Any rapid weight loss will affect their liver function and is potentially fatal. Dogs are much more resilient, like most humans. Be careful with your cat.

Everybody that does that to their pets and children should be tied down and force-fed like the poor birds are for foie gras! As an adult someone can choose to eat until they are obese but animals and children do not have that choice!

If this gets the message across that animal obesity is a problem, then some good will come of it.
