A few hundred yards from the administrative offices of the Guantanamo Bay prison, hidden behind a ridge covered in thick scrub and cactus, sits a closely held secret.

Pls read at site-just an excerpt here from close to end of rather long article:
"The U.S. government had such high hopes for Penny Lane that one former intelligence official recalled discussion about whether to secretly release a pair of Pakistani men into the United States on student or business visas. The hope was that they would connect with al-Qaida and lead authorities to members of a U.S. cell.
Another former senior intelligence official said that never happened."

And you wonder why so many in Congress oppose closing gitmo and releasing inmates /try in US courts?--

Is this a part of the answer of why drones have killed civilians?

They don't want people to know what they do so they can train to resist to begin with so all the waterboarding is mostly bs, this is the height of cold war psychological torture and cross examination, the middle ages of torture? Massive disinformation. But recruiting from the ranks of all kinds of people swept off the streets in far away place or all the one in Abu Graib and Bagram. You can imagine a wealth of people for the CIA types to experiment on and turn into potential agents.
You don't think if it is known someone was held that they aren't forever suspect in the eyes of the countrymen and suspect too for us a counter agents return false reports of who to strike? That is the life of deception and deceit and not be able to tell friend from foe. That is the moral universe of our secret organizations an immoral and growing here at home too. All kinds of organizations, political, religious, corporate are hiring ex CIA types, their contractors, or just learning the tricks of their trade to manipulate society and the world in their favor as amorality catches on and spreads like wildfire.

Noted. Thanks so much for posting, Angelika. (would send you a star, but notice that you asked previously to please not send). I'm glad this information about Penny Lane is getting some attention. I also find it disgusting that they also nicknamed Gitmo "Strawberry Fields." This was the height of the Bush regime crackdown on anything that smelled funny to them, and torture was the word of the year. Fearmongering was everywhere, too. If only we had been told, like in times past from previous presidents, "There is nothing to fear, but fear itself." But, no, we were meant to be terrified to grow the war machine into the monster it became.

TY for further exposing the MIC/CIA. This is not what America is supposed to be.

"in US... hope was that they would connect with al-Qaida"

Their M,O, all along.
