Police cited a local man who they say lost control of his car on Caswell Street early Sunday morning and plowed into a telephone pole, breaking it into three pieces.

John Moses, 23, 108 Colonial Drive, told cops he was driving in his 2002 Honda Accord at 12:30 a.m. when he lost control while trying to avoid an animal crossing the road.

According to the police report, Moses said, I was heading up Caswell Street and a squirrel run out in front of me. I tried to avoid him and hit the pole.

Moses was taken to Morton Hospital and Medical Center where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman for the hospital Monday said.

He was also, while in the hospital that morning, paid a visit by a police officer who issued him a citation for operating a motor vehicle so as to endanger.

Police say the force of the single-car, East Taunton crash was such that the vehicle ended up 75 feet away from the TMLP pole. It also, in the process, resulted in all of the wires running to a house at 244 Caswell St. being ripped away.

There was no mention of excessive speed in the report, but it was noted that there were no skid marks from the pole to where the car came to rest in the roadway.

Officer Peter MacDougall said there was evidence that the Honda traveled on its side after impact before coming to rest on all four wheels. The car belongs to a Colonial Drive woman and not Moses, police said.

All I can say on this one is did the squirrel eat his homework too when he went to school -- or for that type of explanation to the officer he probably did NOT go to school period!!! Wonder did they test him for DUI??? That's right, always blame the animals. If this wasn't such a funny story and made me smile I would say those poor animals always get blamed for everything. Still smiling about this one...thanks & Noted Darn, I brake for birds, but then I'm not going to put myself in that NUT CASE'S car anytime...No way No How!!!

Thanks Raffi! Had a great laugh over this and Marilyn's comment too. Was the squirrel pink, by any chance?

Animal vs. car happens all the time. There are more roads than ever and more cars than ever and less habitat for wildlife than ever. It happens all the time but ussuallly it is the animal that loses. This time it looks like the human that lost.

Didn't the squirrels parents teach it not to play those horrible and mean games with humans? He probably got disconnected from his cell phone call he was on too!

What about calling this piece the Fast and the "Fur"ious? After all, the man had to be going in such a high rate of speed to be smashing the pole as such!

Has anyone asked the squirrel for his side of the story? LOL

I love these comments-don't we need something this funny to keep doing the things we do-I really enjoyed this -and yes, I think the squirrel was pink, Marilyn and yes, Eureka-I think we should get the squirrel's version of the story-and everyone else-this is just FUN! Jen-maybe the squirrel is working on the screenplay-and lining up interviews with Larry King and Oprah! Thanks for your comments everyone-this was a blast!
