Op shop couch comes with bonus cat

Tue, 15 Sep 2009 7:05p.m.

Some old couches have a squeak. One that was delivered to an Ohio Goodwill store came with a meow.

Goodwill employees heard mewing inside the store in northern Ohio and traced the sound to a sofa that was donated on Thursday. Store clerk Kaila Voight said they removed the cushions and out popped the head of a gray-and-black striped kitten, through a slit in the fabric covering the springs.

Goodwill workers then took apart the couch, just to make sure the little cat did not have company. There weren't any others.

The donor called the store later to see if, by chance, a kitten she was missing was inside the couch. When she learned the cat had turned up, she told the shop to let a customer adopt it.

The donors response kind of upsets me. They call to see if a kitten is found in the couch and then say let someone adopt it??? Wouldn't you want the kitten back to make sure YOU found it a good home? Another example of careless pet owners who don't care. Poor kitty ...hope it finds a loving home.

I know-when I read it-I thought WHAT?-I'd like to wrap that couch around her neck! I'll bet the shop reeled from that reaction-it's almost as if she donated the couch knowing the cat was in there and then called to make sure they knew she wanted to be free of the animal. I was angry. Thanks, you guys.

another case of animals being treated like a piece of furniture (no pun intended) seriously, that made me so sad that they treated this kitten's life so carelessly and unloving. what has made people so cruel.

It's my opinion, Shirley, that people have always been cruel-they just needed a catalyst like the economy and whatever else affects them to demonstrate their selfishness and ignorance. I know instances where people have let animals go because the cat did not match the carpet...or clashed with the artwork.

I agree with all of the above great comments. They give the couch away without checking for anything that might have crawled in the sofa, knowing they had a kitten, I know I would have made sure kitty was in a safe place when the movers came, and then they don't want it when found, figures, the people are assh**les.

How easy for the donor to get rid of her kitten. Why in the first place did she get a kitten?

The donor probably stuffed the cat into the couch. Perhaps she felt guilty, then called. Too many people have pets that don't deserve to.

Could be that she had a cat that had had kittens, finding a good home can be difficult, probably why a friend managed to persuade me to take 2 of her cats kittens! 6 years on and they are still here running the household.

That's quite a way to find a home for a kitten..Gillian-put it in a couch and donate it to Goodwill-stranger things have happened...and they get stranger everyday!

I once retrieved a basket from a dumpster filled with starving puppies. It seems there is no limit to the ignorance of some people.

Thanks, Raffi, for making us want to do more for all of these poor little animals!
