According to Jared Diamond's "guns, Germs and Steel...'" settling down took place about 13,000 years ago, with the early cultivation of Barley and Wheat. Shamanism may, indeed, have paved the way for what we call formal religion, but it all has to do with peoples' trying to understand the random workings of their lives, and world, and attempting to control the uncontrollable.
