I'm not sure I understand. I'm all for the end of the slaughter of horses, or any animal for that matter, but after reading the article it seems that they're trying to ban drugs, not slaughter. Am I correct in thinking that they can still technically murder a horse for meat if it's been proven that it's never recieved a medication that's been deemed unfit for human consumption? Perhaps I'm just having a dumb moment, and I really hope that I'm misunderstanding, so could someone please clarify this for me?

Thank you.

Why would anyone want to eat horse meat? Don't enough animals die to feed us why do they have to add the beloved horse.? NOT COOL

Well it is a start...but they say for human consumption, does that mean that they will still be slaughtered and put into pet food or something? Otherwise whynot leave out the "human consumption " bit.

Yes, I'll have to agree that this could be a step in the right direction, but I do not believe this will stop horsse slaughter, they just won't feed it to humans.

A first small step in the right direction, but the other commentators make good points.

Good news Canada, now what about the seal hunt - stop it maybe?

Whatever the reason we must stop slaughtering the horses. One error in article - the U.S. also ships horses to Mexico for slaughter. Honestly, as happy as I am about this, I am surprised that Ottawa is doing the right thing. Since Europe and many other countries have banned seal skins, Ottawa is now pushing seal meat. They even had a seal meat lunch in parliament a few months. Ottawa also continue's to bring in the skins of dogs and cats from China. btw China is big on eating horse meat. Tragically, this is the Canadian government - not listening to it's own citizens. I pray this new set of "conscience" regarding the horses will grow towards all animals and all imports and exports. Then I can be proud of my country.

As I understand it, the christian missionaries to northern Europe frowned on the Viking habit of eating horsemeat. The French indulge.
Did you know that cows express pleasure when solving problems. Studies of animal cognition show just that, cognition.
Do YOU eat cows/ Pigs do better in tests designed to measure intelligence (from human point of view) than do dogs. Do you eat THEM?
One Sierra path before dawn, I encountered salamanders, one of which made straight for a hole it apparently knew of.
Cognition, memory, perhaps fear. What do you eat?

If you do eat any of these things, recognize that it is well to at least recognize them as worthy of respect, reverence - as sacred as you regard yourself or your near kin.
Then and perhaps only then, can you make good choices about what you eat.

Glass houses, beams and motes in eyes. Do you overreproduce, making it necessary that humans eat so many others?

Michael, I don't know if you asking me, since you posted right after I did, or for everyone to think about what you wrote.
For myself - I am aware of the intelligence of animals i.e. pigs are as intelligent as human 5 year olds. I am a vegetarian and I did not have children. This is not a world that I wanted to bring a child into.

Please BOYCOTT any and all Canadian products and services until they ban horse slaughter, just because a bill has been introduced means nothing! This brutality has been going on for YEARS and been shoved away from the public's knowledge. Show them the same LACK OF MERCY they have shown the poor animals, do not spend a penny of your money on Canadian products and services until they show COMPASSION and HUMANITY.

I agree with Nicole D. Why should I believe in Canada compassion for horses when they are exposed to the whole world for their barbaric seal hunting? There is a strong contradiction on this, it seems to me they have no moral authority in pretending defend animal rights, I really donīt believe in them at all

Nothing to be proud about, I don't understand what's the difference between killing horses rather than cows or swaines. The point is how they are grown up, in cages?, in stables, free in fields...

A-L-L Horse Slaughter in Canada needs to be stopped immediately!!!!!! These are barbaric acts that our CDN Goverment still allows...absolutely unbelievable!! This Convervative Goverment, led by member, Steven Harper do NOT care about animal welfare....they demonstrate this on a daily basis!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is good news but now that means the horses will be sent to Mexico which tolerates the torture of all animals and humans. We need to go after the people who breed horses and then take them to slaugther when they don't have a need for them. Only those that love the species should be allowed to have horses and not those that make a profit from the animal.
