On 9/15/14 a devastating fire took out over 100 homes, one of which was Shasta Sanctuary Animal Rescue. They need help, big time. The Boles Fire in Weed California on 9/15/14 wiped out Shasta Sanctuary Animal rescue

Update from Gabby at Shasta Sanctuary:
The burned cats are struggling with their wounds. They have to go in two times a week to be anesthetized and have their burns cleaned at 200 each per cat per procedure. Chance the other burned kitty that was found is doing okay. We still need an extra large dog crate for our old guy. We spent 200 dollars yesterday just on hardware for the gates in the outside enclosure. We are spending tons on gas driving the animals to their new homes and providing all food, medical needs etc. We still have 20 animals in our care or fosters we have to be responsible for. The house had asbestos so we have to pay 2500 for the extra environmental special clean up.

Update posted on the site by James:
Making progress

Posted by James Martin on October 3rd, 2014

Progress is being slowly made to start cleanup of all the homes downed by the fire. (You know how slowly government can work)

It will be at least a year before homes are rebuilt and occupied. This means a lot of help will still be needed to operate the animal rescue out of smaller quarters and more costs for transporting animals will occur before the rebuilt Shasta Sanctuary will be in place.

After this fundraiser ends Dec 16th, (we don't know if it can be extended through this site, or if they allow that) donations can still be sent through paypal to shastasanctuary@live.com if you care to continue to help out.

We're overwhelmed with the generous response, and thankful to people who have donated, even from Europe and Australia. We're grateful for the worldwide response. So any time you have a few extra bucks you'd like to put towards helping animals, we hope you'll remember our situation and "paws for the cause".

Thanks again!

Shasta Sanctuary Animal Rescue and the Yoakum family

Thanks Nancy C, we still need tons of help. Donations have slacked off while coming so close to 10k. People tend to forget that places like this aren't rebuilt over night. And even when it IS rebuilt, due to construction costs being what they are today, they'll be operating with an even greater need for help. Insurance NEVER is enough to make a fire victim whole, and takes forever to get funds, and yet the need to help animals doesn't take a vacation while they're rebuilding.

November update posted at the donation site:
Dufus, the burned cat is now receiving laser treatments twice a week for the next 6 weeks. He seems to be feeling a little better and moving around more. His medical bills are astronomical and we are struggling to get the money together to keep a zero balance with our vets office. They have been amazing to us and our burn cats.
Our property is cleared and we just finalized plans with our architect for our new house. We cant pour concrete in the winter so we are at a standstill until spring.
We will be using the donation money to build kennels with radiant floor heating, purchase beds and all the thousands of little things the rescue animals need. Just one extra large crate is around $200. It adds up fast.
If you would like to help us rebuild our rescue sanctuary please donate to PayPal at shastasanctuary@live.com, through this fundraiser or call the vet directly at 530-926-5266. Thank you!!

We're so sorry to relay to you that last night, Dufus, one of the badly burned cats from the fire, succumbed to his injuries. We had such high hopes that he'd fully recover, but the lung damage was too extensive.

In memory of pets you have loved and lost, please donate to http://gfwd.at/ZOfifx

The fundraiser is winding down. Get your last minute donations in. The money has helped pay a lot of vet bills and expenses to care for animals. Those expenses still continue. They don’t stop just because you donated. Animals will always require expense, as any dog or cat owner can attest. So please continue to help support: https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/16t5/shasta-sanctuary-animal-rescue-burned-out-in-the-boles-fire

One of the surviving dogs, Mars, who they have had for over a decade has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Prognosis is maybe a month to live. More devastating news for them. Survive a fire and then die of cancer.

Today Shasta Sanctuary had to say goodbye to one of their own, Mars, a 10 yr old Pitbull. He survived the fire but got taken by cancer.
This is what a family friend posted:
Today, Mars (Mertle, Merts, Mertle Turtle) crossed over the rainbow bridge.
Mars was abandoned at a California shelter by people who decided that they simply no longer wanted him. He was skinny, and he was covered in scars. He was about 10 years old. It was clear he had not had a great life. As someone who actively works in rescue, I can say that dogs like that usually do not make it out of the shelter alive. But when the Yaokums heard of him, they stepped up the plate. They drove many hours to go save his life…but they did so much more than that. They rehabilitated him, as he was animal-aggressive. They taught him what it was to be loved and cherished, and they gave him an amazing life.
Mars was ridiculously easy to love. There was something so special about him, something I simply cannot put my finger on. My favorite memory is when he and his momma came to spend the night at my house. I woke up in the middle of the night, and there against my legs was Mars. Next to him, curled up against his chest, was my foster kitty. She was purring. I fell back asleep with a smile on my face.
The Yoakums took him from a bad situation and taught him what it was to love and to be loved. When it was his time, they let him go…those are the best things that anybody can do for a dog.
Rest in peace, Mars. You are loved.

Framing has begun on Shasta Sanctuary. After MASSIVE delays, mostly due to the city water pipes and weather, our building is WAY behind schedule and that is costing us a lot of money in expenses living elsewhere. Not having our home base up and running also means it costs us more money to continue to help needy animals find good homes. Your continued support is appreciated and as always, goes to a good cause.....rehoming deserving animals and vet care, which even at a discount is still quite costly. Shasta Sanctuary greatly appreciates all the donations thus far, both in money and physical supplies, such as food, blankets, crates, dog beds, etc. The need though, continues. It's just in our blood to rescue abused and lost animals.

Just because there was a fire that took out half a town and the arsonist is now in prison, animals in need isn't put on hold. They don't stop getting injured or ill, they don't stop getting lost and in a sad number of cases it doesn't stop them from being abused by careless owners and others.

I know that some of our donors are now tapped out, so just take this update as an informational one, but if anyone wants to donate more, or even just help spread the link to everyone, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to all those who have reached out to help.
