Is New York About to Pass Marriage Equality?

It appears that not just three Democrats who had been wavering on their vote on a marriage equality bill in the New York State Senate are changing their votes to yes. Some Republicans might be joining them.

There ought not to be any debate about it. It should be taken for granted that people who love each other should be able to marry.

YES YES YES. Ok, so I'm yelling but that's good news I think. Too bad that Ca. didn't keep that equality going due to the Morman out of state bucks especially. Oh step at a time. At least in Ca. those who did marry during the equality time span remain so. We were married just three days before they took it away from others after that date.

Thanks for the hopeful news about equality coming to NY finally.

It just may happen here in NY. I'm actually surprised about it. So may Right-wingnuts think "gay" is contagious.

John Gergore, I see this argument all the time from both sides: "Why are they devoting time to this when we have so amy big issues facing us?"

I just want to ask people who say that: "When did they pass a law that governments could only tackle one or two issues at a time?" All those things you listed are obviously important issues that they should be tackling, but I demand that my politicians be able to multi-task. If I thought they couldn't handle multiple issues at a time I would not vote for them. There are ALWAYS tons of critical issues that need attention all the time and that has been the case since governments were first formed. Should lawmakers not address all these other issues because they haven't solved the jobs, budget, healthcare etc crises? NO. They have to deal with all of the issues that come up, and this is one of them.

So they wrangle and hash things out and devote a couple of hours to debate and then vote. Did that bring goverment to its knees? No, it got another thing done, like they are supposed to. Gay marrige rights are obviously not a priority to you, but to millions of commtted gay couples it's a very important, life altering debate. And just like any other debate about a minority group's issues, those not part of that group may see it as unimportant. But it is, to many, many people and I'd like to think that others can feel empathy enough to acknowledge that this issue does matter to a lot of people and therefore it deserves some attention. No, it's not as pressing as the budget, but that doesn't mean it has no place in the politcal discourse.

Love should be the defining reason for getting married. I know same sex couples that have been together for over 20 years and can't get married and it's wrong. Equality for everybody. It's time to get past the stupid bigotry and excuses that have been trotted out for too long. The same excuses were used to try and prevent interracial marriage and now everybody realises how stupid that was. Gay marriage will happen and people will look back in the future and wonder what took people so long for it to happen.

Yes!! This IS an important issue, especially for those of us who've been in long term relationships and are still deprived of BASIC legal rights that are routinely given to straight couples. Anything that strips away a person's civil rights or prevents them from his/her "life, liberty or pursuit of happiness" is an important issue!
For those who still find this a minor issue or a distraction from more important ones, how about rereading your Declaration of Independence or if you have more time on your hands, the American Constitution.
