From Gallop (

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans were as likely to be obese in 2012 as they were in 2011. But the 26.2% who were obese in 2012 remains slightly higher than the 25.5% recorded in 2008. Another 36.1% of Americans were overweight in 2012 and about as many were a normal weight -- 35.9%."

Personally, it should be acceptable to tell people they are fat, or to treat them like we treat those that smoke.

not just fatter but sicker, between all the antibiotics in livestock, hand sanitizers, dishwashing liquid, etc
our immune systems are not needed and shut down, leading to diabetes and other immune disorders
I don't eat meat,or take antibiotics anymore, just probiotics to kick start my immune system
also intermittent fasting makes it work much better, over 8 hours without food at a time, not hard at all

uh....maybe less exercise? Sitting around the computer/tv ?
I still do dairy, but I look for no growth hormone on the label.. If it makes cows grow bigger...couldn't it also grow tumors ? Too risky to wait years from now when the results come in that...gosh, it DOES grow breast cancer!!!

Not to mention that no one gets out for more than maybe 1/2 an hour a day of fresh air ane exercise, and very few people sit down any more to a calm family dinner where food is tastefully prepared and thoughtfully consumed. The stresses of our "modern" lifestyle will kill us all off one by one if we don't fight back. Give me old-fashioned, any day.

I closed this page immediately upon being asked to "Like" on Facebook by a popup ad. I despise Facebook and am tired of having this Government Spyware shoved down my throat. I have a popup blocker also. If your ad is specifically designed to thwart an ad blocker I will NEVER do business with your company, even if I am in need of services you offer. The BEST way to stop me from signing a petition or assisting a cause is to try to force Facebook or ANY unwanted ad down my throat. I DO NOT do business with Spammers! Period!

Marc P., I'm with you. I too despise facebook and frankly I'm sick of seeing its logo EVERYWHERE I LOOK. As for spammers, I have flagged so many of them it's beyond a joke. Does Care2 still have any mods?? If so, they're not doing their job very well.

The only way to lose weight is to control your eating. There is no other way.

Perhaps I missed it but high fructose corn syrup that is put into everything is also a weight gainer. Also so many people are in situations they can't afford the higher priced healthier foods or are living in a food desert as many who live in the inner cities find themselves with limited choices of food items to select from.

while I am at it,I have given up white foods
bleached foods is a better description
white; salt,sugar,flour,pasta,bread,cheese,
I eat the brown equivalents, but not much as they are all sugar in disguise ,aside from the salt of course which has it's own demons, and I am vegan,so I will not touch animal flesh or milk

Thank you, so many reasons this is happening. We're creating the perfect storm for such developments. Many jobs and much entertainment are done in a sendentary position now, everyone staring at computer, phone, TV screens. Kids don't run and play, they sit next to each other and text each other. We all should be gardening instead of eating fast food, but the system has made it so a lot of people have no space, time or means to garden. People should be letting their kids play outside, but many live in dangerous areas with no yards, where the parks are full of crack addicts and sex traffickers, so they let their kids stay home and play X-Box instead. We have created things so backwardly, we are losing the open spaces.

Horrible junk they put in all the cheapest foods, poison, really. Even some of the not-so-cheap but convenient foods are jam packed with crap. If you're poor, you're screwed. If you're not so poor, you need to be a genius with a ton of time on your hands to read labels and catch everything they slip in. They keep changing the names so you don't know what to look for on the label.

I try to avoid anything vaguely sounding like corn at this point, since it's both GMO and used in sweeteners that are far too sweet for our brains to cope with. (How sad, and symbolic, what they have done to the once mighty maize.)

Also all the fake sweeteners that were supposed to make it easy for people to lose weight. So many people sucked down all that aspartame and sucralose and goodness knows what, and it turned out to fool the brain into thinking it was consuming sugar since it's overly sweet, which meant people weren't losing weight from it after all. It's sad.

They want us fat, illl, complacent, unable to get out and rally against the madness. It's impossible to avoid all of it at this point, but we can do our best to avoid the evils and poisons we know.

Completely and utterly disgusting! Not a care in the world for our children for our animals for the increase in the amount of energy it takes for all this girth. For the cost to our planet our future our health. DISGUSTING! So sad.

Very true, Kamia T. When I was younger, we were always outside and active as children, we came inside for meals and spent so much time outdoors with a lot of activities that kept us slim. A lot of children these days spend far more time inside on their computers or watching a screen of some sort.

Your country also tends to allow far more antibiotics in meat along with growth hormones. American milk is banned for sale in my country and Europe because of this.

I eat meat, but small amounts that are not factory farmed. Also, these days, so many foods that are not meat or dairy are also highly processed, filled with HFCS and other additives.

There are some people, Fi T that do get overweight because they happen to take certain medications that cause weight gain, even if they exercise. I am lucky and don't require medication but there are some who are ill or some who are also wheelchair bound with various disabilities that have gained weight as a result of medication.

Where I live, there are all sorts of lakes and rivers that one can walk for hours and enjoy the scenery. I like to remain active, to canoe and paddle a kayak, there are many activities that help keep one fit.

We also don't know what the long term effects of GMO foods are as well.

I prefer to eat food that is organic, non-GMO, it is far safer and cooking one's meals from scratch allows one to monitor the ingredients, unlike the highly processed prepared foods that are sold in the grocery stores around the world.

Very true, Dandelion G, the overuse of HFCS is certainly a factor when it comes to obesity and likely diabetes for some.

I don't live in the States but it is also used in some countries. Also, many countries have gone down the road of highly refined food products with plenty of additives and other unhealthy things. No one knows what GMO food does to people in the long term either.

One certainly does notice that children often don't get as much exercise compared to what we had when I was young, we were outside every day and many children spend a lot more time inside and on the computer or whatever. Many schools discontinue physical education.

"Go vegan and you do not have a weight problem" says Inge Bjorkman. Sorry, that is patently false. There are some vegans and vegetarians out there who are also obese. While the vegans don't eat meat or dairy, some eat too much junk food that happens to be veggie-based such as potato chips or whatever. Being vegan or vegetarian is no guarantee when it comes to weight problems if one doesn't follow a balanced diet. There are omnivores that are not in the least bit overweight. All it requires is a well-balanced diet, eating foods that are as natural as is possible. Avoiding meat that is factory farmed helps, organically raised, pasture feed meat is far superior.

The U.S, allows a lot of things to be put in its food that is outright banned in some other countries such as certain hormones in milk for example. (Does not apply to organic milk).
