Too often low-level nonviolent drug addicts dealing to feed their habit end up being sentenced like drug kingpins.

Good for Judge Bennett! No doubt there are other judges who feel the same but are afraid to speak out. Remember, it took just one woman refusing to give up her seat on a bus, merely because she had "too much" melanin in her skin, that led to people being able to sit anywhere on a bus they wanted to regardless of the color of their hides.

Bit late in the day, nevertheless, time will tell: same old, same old, century after century.

Mandatory sentencing is insidious as it prevents judges from using their own reasoning in determining sentences, instead requiring them to carry out inherently unjust laws. Noted. Thanks, Cal.

The "War on Drugs" was never a war on drugs, it was a war on minorities, specifically Blacks, and, I'll bet, with the intent of building up the number of Blacks who would never again be able to vote!!
The "associated" article, about Rand Paul's move to change the system is valuable. Jeff Sessions, a long time BIGOT, called out by Coretta Scott King, decades ago, would be all too happy to see still more lives ruined; the White ones just being collateral damage!

Bet if she came from money or had certain connections that an exception could be made

The US justice system is so screwed up. Perhaps rather than having mandatory minimums, sentences should be determined by a panel of 3 judges, or 2 additional judges should concur on sentences below the minimum which would allow some leeway. I can understand the possible reasons for a minimum --- corruption/bribery, consistency --- but minimums can also make hardened criminals out of people fighting an addiction. Dumb, really dumb. Can hardly wait to see Sessions, Drumpf et al locked up for treason. Karma can be a bitch!
