As you know the Republican Convention will start tomorrow. If you want to catching up, get background information, familiarize yourself with the convention or want to get a Dutch correspondent's view on American politics, have a read.

Most Americans will be aware that the Republican Convention will start tomorrow, but for those living elsewhere that news may have been eclipsed by the shocking news of other events such as the horrific attack in Nice or the attempted coup in Turkey. For those who want to do a quick catching up, get some background information, familiarize themselves with this particular convention for the first time or are just interested in a Dutch view on a very American happening, the translated article below may be of interest.

Wow. If this is as seen from afar, you and Guus Valk would seem to have the eyes of eagles. Even to Hillary being the second most unpopular candidate in modern history. Which is a pity.

I've been re-reading Jill Abramson, who states that Hillary was able to be slandered, and the slander was made to stick so easily, basically because of her desire for personal privacy, not because of any actual wrongdoing. Of all people, I should be able to understand this, since it is something I strongly share. Robert Reich says the same. Of course I have never even contemplated running for any office! And my desire for personal privacy has been a big factor in that.

That's what it looks like from here, too!
Thanks, Lona

Very interesting, Lona, thanks.

On reading that a motorcycle club's bikers will be riding security, I jump directly to the Rock and roll show at the Altamont Speedway, in California, where the Hell's Angels were providing that service, until they killed a guy!! But, it seemsfitting for Trump, as these are, most prbably, the wonderful "uneducated" that he so loves. I wonder whether, or not, they will be wearing Brown shirts.

I will not be watching, though I have no George to warn me off! If(?) things go awry at the convention, we will all be sureto hear about it, unless we watch CNN. Parenthetically, I ask again, has Murcoch secretly bought himself a controlling interest therein?

As for Robert Reich's picture of Hillary, and her wish for privacy, as per Joanne's comment, when one is in public office, unlike First Lady, one is going to have to sacrifice some of that. If Reich is right about that being why the slander so easily sticks, it is a lesson in "Perception is everything," sadly. The "influential conservatives" who think "Trump is without principle," happen to be correct, not that they have a vice grip thereupon; certainly not where family values are concerned!

Paul Ryan has a broad coalition? Of what, the most hypocritical, and deluded, segments of American society? The one percenters and the God bangers?

Good article, Lona, in seeing how y'all view this Convention.
So true, and I have no intention of watching the spectacle on tv, or otherwise. I can only imagine how this chaos/fiasco will end up!

*Joanne, your links are noteworthy re: HRC also. I recommend everyone to read, and Mr. Reich is correct in his assessment of her also.

Thank you, Lona for your post.

True enough, it will be a Trump convention, not a republican convention. Which is just fine. I don't care what polls show, that man will never be president, just never. Very well written, Lona, and right on point. Thing that is most important is that although Hillary may not be liked, Trump is truly hated by many and feared by more than that. Which will mean a landslide victory for Clinton and I truly believe the Senate and I hope down ticket through congressional races and state races as well because a cleaning of house is desperately needed everywhere after 6 full years of Tea Party stink permeating the country.

Sad thing is the distance from constituents and voters will also be a factor for Clinton and the DNC at their convention.

"Donald Trump will have himself crowned this week in the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland as presidential candidate for the Republican party..."

Yes, the boy-man King/Emperor will together with his family/clan crown himself on national TV.

"Many Republicans still think of Trump as a passer-by, and that his followers will disappear of their own accord. Maybe congressional elections will turn out better than expected in November...."

These republicans don't seem to understand, he's not going away, ever: win or lose. And with the way he's propelled his family into the whole mix, there may be Trumps in republican politics for a very long time.

"And if Trump loses the White House, that's no disaster either. Everything will return to normal even faster after November. Even a chaos at the Convention – riots, anarchy, shouting – suits the elite just fine."

If starting a new christian republican party is a 'return to normal' than so be it. Slump's gonna take his 20-40 million plus and go his own way. Hasta la vista, baby.

Like everybody else here, I'll not be watching the convention, only catching a few details on the news. Given the notoriety of Trump and his minions, his propensity to incite violence etc, I think the UFC fights see less blood letting than will the Republican convention. With open carry outside the venue and armed Bikers for Trump patroling . . . not a sane moment to be had.

Guus Valk — "But the next few days in Cleveland Trump has the opportunity to thoroughly reorganize the party." — I don't think Trump could organise his way out of a wet political bag. In order for Trump to reorganise and unite the party, somebody is going to have to hold their nose.

I was talking with a woman after church who keeps an eye on US politics. In her opinion, the US is close to hitting rock bottom, particularly with the spectre of a Trump administration. Once it hits bottom, the revolution will kick in full gear and hopefully a clean up ensues. It may be a long winter.

Thank you all. We're getting news coverage straight from the convention every day now. The greatest problem the Dutch reporter had last night, is keeping himself from smirking when giving the details on this "greatest show ever" as the Drumpfs promised (yes, 6 of them are talking). It's both utterly ridiculous and scary at the same time that the election of the leader of most powerful nation in the world has turned into low level entertainment needed to gloss over the lack of vision of the candidate and party and the truly dark and dangerous Republican platform.
