Despite the ducks gusto, bread is mostly bad for them. It can lead to health woes like obesity, malnutrition and possibly a crippling condition known as "angel wing."..... Featured story on today's Animal News Sentinel.

i read this somewhere else today too.
i don't know how it will be stopped, so many people feed the ducks bread at all the parks here.
One guy even does the rounds of bakeries & collects what they don't sell at the end of the day, he brings huge sacks!
i guess councils could put up signs but i don't see that happening soon.

Thanx Dan

Bread should NOT be fed to ANY species of bird not just waterfowl.

Now I know. Thank you for this article. It made me feel silly but now I know I am harming them instead of helping them.

We have a sign in the local park requesting that people not feed the birds and explaining why.

Done. Ever analyzed the chemicals and other ingredients in most breads off the shelf?

NOW you tell me - after years of feeding bread to ducks. Even genuinely healthful bread is bad for them? OK, from now on it's corn (non-GMO of course) and duck pellets. I have heard that grapes are good.

We all learn something new most everyday Freya.Don't feel bad. With over 6 million loaves of bread each year served up to birds of all kinds in England and Wales alone, you definately are not the only one who has made this mistake although be it with good intentions.
Thank you all for your notes and comments on this informative article :-)

I've been feeding the ducks in our local pond bird seed. I think I'm going to stop feeding them because even if I am giving them food that doesn't harm them it encourages them to stay in one place. They would be better off to have more than one feeding ground. Doesn't it also interfere with migration?

They say this a lot on the news, and yet people do continue to do it.

I, too, am guilty of feeding them bread (and slugs from the garden). Will bring thawed peas next time, per the full article.

Common sense is not common ...... where would wild ducks obtain manufactured bread from ??

I hope this is read by many people. They mean well, but bread is even not that healthy for us anymore with all the chemicals, etc. It's actually cruel to feed ducks with such an unnatural food - even veggies would be better.

I even used to wonder about good, organic homemade bread---because of the yeast and any sugar. Best to try to emulate Mother Nature, if the bird is in trouble. If it isn't, let it forage. Thanks Dan. Great posting.

White bread basically becomes a glorified form of glue in everyone's stomach -- human and animal alike. We need to avoid it at ALL costs. Ducks like veggies, grain and bugs. Smarter than humans by a long shot!
