Apparently the Knesset has forgotten about how similar measures were once used to crack down on Jews. When you look long into the abyss...

It's all about clamping down on anything that doesn't praise uncritically the increasingly extremist & oppressive politics of the Israeli government & right wing Zionists ....

Meanwhile, less official tactics are being used to shut down Israelis - including Rabbis - who dare criticise: see Rabbis for Human Rights Website Hacked - Then Suspended as one example .....
And of course - posting a petition to classify support for BDS as anti-Semitic ... small scale, but the same process of stifling free speech if it involves calling for a change to oppressive politics (in Israel ... BDS is fine for Iraq, South Africa, Iran )

As the article says:
"And that, finally, is how the Israel/Palestine conflict is related to the anti-cult law. Israel’s right-wing government has proposed a rash of anti-democratic, identity-oriented laws in the past few years: loyalty oaths to the Jewish state, penalties for speaking in favor of boycotting Israel (i.e. exercising free speech), observing Israeli independence day by mourning (i.e. exercising free assembly), and now this. It has also proposed laws limiting the activities of NGOs, making the Supreme Court accountable to the legislature, and a host of other anti-democratic acts. The government includes parties that believe the West Bank is divinely promised to Jews, and that only strong Jewish nationalism can prevail against intractable Arab enemies.

This is the most Jewishly nationalistic government in Israel’s history, and both its policies toward the Palestinians and its embrace of the anti-cult law are part of that overall ideology. The anti-cult law may seem like some random, weird throwback, but in fact it is one more way in which the avowed “Jewish and democratic state” is becoming more Jewish, and less democratic."

Thanks, Sam

Thanks for this excellent article, Sam. It gives a very complete analysis of what has brought this extravagant law about and what its intentions really are and that is not to protect the vulnerable from dangerous sects, but to keep Israel as Jewish as possible, or as Jay Michaelson describes it: "In America, anti-cult activity is about preserving individual autonomy against predators like the “Church” of Scientology. But in Israel, it’s about preventing Jews from leaving the fold." People are not allowed to step out of the government prescribed bounds, if they do they risk being placed under legal guardianship of the state. Another step towards a totalitarian Jewish state.

I'm a bit baffled you're now resorting to The Daily Beast!
Lona said it quite accurately. And how odd is it anyway if a Knesset wants to judge about spiritual culture when they have zero themselves, only what appears to be embracing a death cult. And using slurs in their law suits them well, too!

The Daily Beast is one respectable news outlet! Did you know they bought Newsweek when it went under, and they were one and the same for some time? Well, as respectable as all the others! Are you objecting to their reporting, or to their name?

I'm objecting to their govt.-leaning neocon/neolib (there's hardly much difference left) stance on poitics!
Particularly when it comes to one Michael Weiss!
