Noted. Thx Sam. Cuomo should f*** himself upside down, inside out and sideways. Ditto for the rest of the treasonous Congressional scum who support Israeli genocide, war crimes, and many other crimes against humanity. Grrrrr...

What if it's not in the financial interest of the state to do so? Wouldn't that be enough reason to impeach Cuomo?

Thanks, Sam!
Not entirely surprising -
After all, haven't we been told over and over again, that BDS only hurts the poor Palestinian workers?
That it doesn't affect the Israeli economy at all?

Of course, one might then - if one has any integrity and a few functioning brain cells - ask:
Why is it those who "Stand with Israel" who praise Cuomo's action?

COULD it be that this non-violent strategy to highlight the illegality of settlements in the Occupied Territories and the oppressive policies & strategies of the Israeli government (enforced by IDF and extremist settlers) IS in fact having a negative impact?

Making people stop and ask themselves questions that extremist & right-wing Israelis certainly do NOT want asked?
And, as a result - DARING to CRITICISE Israel's continued Occupation and oppression of Palestinians ...
DARING to differentiate between Jewish ethnicity, Judaic religion, Israeli nationality and political Zionism. Political Zionism that allows - even, in extremist cases, endorses - human rights abuse in the interests of achieving political Zionism's aims of a "pure" Jewish (Zionist) homeland state that covers not only the area attributed to Israel but also that allocated to the Palestinians (only less of 10% of which were Jewish at the time of official creation of the State of Israel) who lived in the area between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River.

(Ros - Love your first comment! Probably a lot of truth there!!)

Jess - chutzpah is definitely the word for the "threatening" video discussed in that article, “Israel is fighting for you”!

Not only for the message discussed!
Because what the writer didn't realise when he wrote that article is that the video was pure plagiarism! Of an award winning short animation film! The Israeli propaganda company just added labels, to convert a delightful 70 second animated story for kids into a political propaganda film. What's more, the story, WITHOUT the message imposed, could be said to be a fair parallel ... the "defender" triggers the catastrophe (inadvertently), tries to prevent it, but then gets angry and allows the worst to happen ...
YES - Chutzpah is the word!!

(I've posted a link to the original Canadian film in the comments below the story)

This is worse than 21st century McCarthyism because it is orchestrated by another country and it bypassed the state legislature and what Baher Azmy called "the possibility of a bona fide debate on the American tradition of boycotting in support of social justice." That should have set off some alarmbels about who's behind it.

Thanks for posting, Sam.

Thanks Sam,

A predictably small but Powerful article.

"NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday issued the first executive order in the country that forces state entities to drop investments linked to boycotts of Israel......Democratic governor expects state agencies to divest all public funds from any company or individual with ties to the movement known as Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. BDS was founded in 2005 to protest Israel's actions toward Palestinians by boycotting Israeli products and companies........Cuomo says New York will boycott anyone who is boycotting Israel.......This order sends the message that this state will do everything in its power to end this hateful, intolerant campaign," the governor said. "New York and Israel share an unbreakable bond......."

What a real lap-dog you are Gov Cuomo, brown nose ass kisser to the DNC and your money masters. Congratulations in deciding for the American people what, where, who, why and how they want to boycott a company or country. You were not elected to end (what your Israeli donor masters call) a "hateful, intolerant boycott campaign", you are in office to serve all the people equally and to uphold your state and national constitutions. All New Yorkers, not just a selected few, will remember your fascism and vote accordingly, and if you decide to ever go national, your un-American decision will follow you.

Also, you mentioned 'an unbreakable bond' New York and Israel share? Nothing is permanent in life, if it were, we'd still be living in a Persian or Greek empire. If/when enough New Yorkers and Americans are awakened to their true political reality, than the 'bond' could/will be broken.

Why should unelected civil servants abuse their position and public funds to carry out their own personal political agendas?
What if a civil servant wants to do the same against black or Hispanic countries/companies, is that fair?!
Racism is racism.

The words of the Governor "I pray that the Israeli and Palestinian people will find a way to live side by side and find peace, prosperity and security."
Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Israel did NOT "Obliterate our First Amendment"!!! And the title of this piece is a HUGE part of the problem. It allows everyone reading to place the blame elsewhere! You want to know who obliterated the 1st Amendment? WE THE PEOPLE DID! We obliterated it through our craven silence and cowardly inaction. The citizens of New York should be OUTRAGED and up in arms! Do you see anyone protesting??? NO! Our Constitution is being openly decimated whole scale but the idiots citizens in this country are too busy fawning over the next Dictator in Chief (Trump) to notice, or even care. It figures this came in NY first, not anywhere else. and, of course, despite all petitions to stop this madness,
What's the difference between "the state" (of NY) and the state (of Israel), or, is there even any?
Thx Sam.

Ros, I love that song, always have!!

And I think Angelika's comparison concerns to decision-making power, not the demographics, in NY! Far from all NY Jews support Israel, some Christians are Christian Zionists, but when decisions are made that relate to Israel & its style of government, a few carry very disproportionate weight! There is an overlap between 1%s ... and there are non-supporters who are in one 1% and not the other ...

I see that John hangs on to his illusion that Palestinians are the major victims of BDS, as though supporting Israeli industry in the (illegal) settlements would actually enable Palestine to develop its economy! I really don't know how he manages to convince himself of this - but that is his problem, not mine! Meanwhile, IDF continues to flatten EU-supported projects in the Occupied Territories, ensuring that the Palestinian economy cannot develop ...
See Squandered Aid: Israel’s repetitive destruction of EU-funded projects in Palestine

Israel has destroyed $74 million worth of EU projects

"An $11-million farming project in the Jordan Valley, a $61,200 playground near Nablus and an elementary school serving a Bedouin community east of Jerusalem: all have been destroyed by Israel.

These are just a few examples of the at least 150 European-funded structures in the occupied West Bank that Israel demolished in the first three months of 2016.

Israel has destroyed more homes, businesses and public infrastructure in these months than in all of 2015, according to a new report by the non-profit Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, or Euro-Med."

" Euro-Med says that the UN deputy coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Piper, has suggested the increase in demolitions is a response to the escalation of violent confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli occupation forces that began in October 2015.

But Israeli politician Moti Yogev, who has applied pressure on Israeli occupation forces to ramp up demolitions, said, “I have no doubt that the government’s firm stance is in part a result of the unilateral measures taken by Europe,” referring to the EU’s decision to label settlement products late last year."

(Of course - since the bulk of materials have either to be bought from Israeli companies or imported through Israel - by Israeli transport companies - this means any replacement/reconstruction means more income for Israeli companies - "Aid for Trade" ensured by destruction work!!)

Evelyn, you really believe your own lies? As Palestinian workers, in their own words, said, there should have been a thousand SodaStreams. In that factory, Jew, Christian and Arab worked happily and peacefully together. There was friendly harmony, even when the Gaza conflict was going on.
They had the dignity of work. they were earning good money. they were enjoying a decent standard of living. They were happy!
But they lost all that thanks to racist 'No surrender' Western luvvies who live hundreds, even thousands of miles away. As the workers themselves said these people only did them harm.

A leading constitutional rights attorney calls the action "21st century McCarthyism."

Well I hope that the constitutional lawyers pull this one into court......

guess this must be all part of THE PLEDGE

You see why I keep seeing little difference between most of the Democrats and the Republicans. On many things they follow the same dance steps only on some social matters do they sing a different tune but even there many times they follow the same dance steps. As they say, talk is cheap and so is singing.

Vote them OUT people.....wakey wakey........your Parties are USING you and SCREWING you over.

Is why many of us Independents are Independents........now most Independents need to start VOTING like Independents and stop propping up the neo cons no matter which Party they come from. You know that lesser than two evils BS.

IF the IDF disappeared overnight, what would happen?????

The Palestinians would swarm into Israel. There'd be an orgy of rape and murder of Jews, and probably Christians too. A genocide.
There'd be an orgy of looting and arson too.
Many Israeli Arabs would be killed or driven from their homes for being 'collaborators', for enjoying the good life with the enemy whilst they were slumming it in Gaza and WB.
There'd be a vicious civil war between Fatah and Hamas to gain control, as happened in Gaza Province a few years back. Hamas, being more vicious, would win.
You'd end up with a macrocosm of what there is now, an aggressive Mafia state, exporting unrest to its neighbours, denying human rights, no democracy, no one man one vote, women as second class citizens and gays in fear of their lives!
Heaven help the Palestinians and Heaven help the world community!
This is what you want????

The establishment and promotion of democracy, of political and social moderacy in Gaza and the West Bank is what is needed. You won't get that by rabble-rousing, hate stirring like we see on here on a near daily basis.

Dandelion - that was a very relevant interview!! What a pledge! I wonder if it is still being demanded?? (Discretely)

BDS is a non-violent movement, launched by Palestinians in Palestine & supported by Palestinians, Jews, Christians and others around the world.

While it is true that alternative employment is limited for Palestinians - especially when Palestinian industries get demolished or are forced to close by the Israeli authorities - the "idyllic" situation described by those who unconditionally support Israel is a nice bit of propaganda.

See Palestinian Workers in Settlements, by Who Profits, which started as a project of the Coalition of Women for Peace (CWP) – a Palestinian-Jewish organization.

Or For many Palestinians, Israel settlement work the only option

Yes - Palestinians pay a price when BDS causes industries to move out of the illegal settlements into Israel proper ...
All the more so because Israeli policy is to destroy any economic development that could provide work within the (non-settlement) West Bank.

Can those so admiring of Israeli policies explain why it is so terrible to require labelling that reflects that these goods are produced in the settlements, rather than within Israel itself?

Can you imagine a situation where the only industries NOT liable to destruction are those in a foreign country? And that foreign country systematically destroys structures built locally to enable economic growth & employment ? So the people have to seek uncertain employment "abroad", vulnerable to loss of visa, work permit ...

Except, of course, in this particular case, "abroad" is actually located WITHIN the country - but all the benefits & taxes revert to the foreign country ... under a set-up that is illegal under international law.

And the non-violent strategy adopted to resist this is BDS -
End the occupation, and BDS would have no reason to continue.

That's exactly right Evelyn (though some non existant 'Angela' was addressed there)
The question behind my comment would be, how can it be that 1% of the NY population can generate so much power over the rest to impose rules that benefit a foreign country,Israel alone while being harmful to NY business PLUS going against the constitution !??

Hamas executed three prisoners the other day. Ten more executions planned apparently.
Amnesty International denounced the executions and said " The deep flaws in the Gaza Strip's justice system, with repeated reports pointing to the widespread use of torture, make today's executions particularly egregious."
Even the PA said "carrying out the executions represent a flagrant violation of the Palestinian basic law"

Video: BDS is “democracy in action”. TheRealNews

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-eDiPoRlOk

Ali Abunimah: NY Governor Blacklists BDS to Defend Israeli Apartheid.

On Monday I spoke with Sharmini Peries of The Real News about New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s executive order against the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

Signed in the presence of Israeli government and Israel lobby officials on Sunday, the measure orders New York bureaucrats to create a blacklist of companies and institutions deemed to be supporters of BDS.

State agencies must then divest any funds from bodies named on the blacklist.

As I say in the interview in the video above, the executive order is a direct attack on First Amendment free speech rights.

“The BDS movement is democracy in action, and there’s nothing that people like Cuomo and the bigwigs in the Democratic Party and the Republican Party hate more than democracy in action,” I explain.

But it is important to stress that despite all the restrictions that Israel lobby groups are pushing governments to adopt, no one can actually make it a crime in the United States to support the boycott of Israel.

The right to boycott is protected by the Constitution.

This means that it remains perfectly legal to call for, organize and mobilize for boycott of Israel or any other state or entity – for example, North Carolina.

One clarification: in the interview I refer to a measure that would bar state agencies from contracting services from individuals or companies that are on the blacklist.

This provision is contained in bill A8220A that is currently before the New York legislature.

But it is not in the governor’s executive order, which deals only with investment of state funds.

Following the latest attacks by Apartheid Israel against BDS activists and threatening them with “civic assassination” and imposing a travel ban of some of them, PSCABI, as part of the broader Palestinian BDS campaign, has conducted an interview with Haidar Eid to introduce the movement to those who are not familiar with it, especially students. Eid is a member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. He is based in besieged Gaza.
